Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Under the general supervision of the Director of Nursing, assists with the planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and evaluating the delivery of nursing services and education programs of the Diagnostic and Treatment Center. Acts as a change agent, leader, role model and cost effective professional. Elevates the standard of professional nursing practice at Gouverneur, by developing, coaching and mentoring staff to become expert clinicians and leaders.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists the Director of Nursing with planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and evaluating Nursing Services in the Diagnostic and Treatment Center.
2. Demonstrates current clinical knowledge of best practices and regulations impacting Ambulatory Care.
3. Assists with the development of policies, procedures and programs, both clinical and administrative; as well as the standards for practice in Ambulatory Nursing. Recommends changes in response to external regulations.
4. Assists with the development of and ongoing revision of an Orientation Program, for both professional and non-professional staff.
5. Directs the activities of the Head Nurses and oversees the coordination of patient care to ensure the delivery of quality patient care.
6. Identifies and defines problems relating to the delivery of care and recommends solutions or corrective actions.
7. Prepares evaluation tools based on competencies for work performance and provides recommendations for corrective action/improvement when necessary.
8. Evaluates the work performance of Head Nurses and other nursing personnel, when necessary. Reviews all evaluations/competencies of nursing personnel.
9. Assesses the delivery of nursing care and services to patients by making clinic rounds and conducting chart review.
10. Develops and coordinates performance improvemenUquality assurance projects and activities for Ambulatory Care Nursing as well as interdisciplinary projects.
11. Ensures staff familiarity with policies and procedures.
12. Attends and may chair the regular Head Nurse meeting.
13. Maintains open communications with all levels of staff and departments in ambulatory care to promote effective working relationships.
14. Prepares time sheets, verifies attendance and updates attendance data base.
15. Develops effective staffing patterns depending on patient care needs and clinical operations.
16. Assists in the preparation and implementation of training and education activities for all levels of ambulatory care staff.
17. Responds to patient complaints and works to resolves issues precipitating patient dissatisfaction.
18. Identifies, addresses and communicates risk management issues.
19. Serves on various committees; such as QIAC, Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Infection Control, etc.
20. Participates and performs in all drills: Fire Safety, Disaster and Rapid Response Team.
21. Participates in Out Reach activities, as requested.
22. Serves on various DTC Committees, as necessary, and participates in environmental and infection control rounds.
23. Assists in the implementation and monitoring of staff compliance to the Corporate Patient Safety Program as well as Regulatory and Quality activities and projects.
24. Attends professional workshops, conferences and other educational meetings to promote growth, broaden knowledge and skills.
25. Assumes responsibility for the Department in the absence of the Director of Nursing.
26. Performs other duties as may be requested by the Director of Nursing.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Minimum Qualifications
1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3), below.
2. Masters Degree in Nursing Administration, Education, Clinical Specialty or equivalent field and five years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which three years shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and six years of satisfactory nursing experience, four years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity.
3. A satisfactory equivalent of education and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.

1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State
2. Current certification in Ambulatory Care Nursing, preferred.

EDUCATIONAL LEVEL:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, Master's Degree, preferred.
