The Division of Natural and Built Environment (NBE) is one of four divisions under the School of Science and Engineering (SSE) at UMKC. NBE Division includes the Faculties of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Architecture, Urban Planning + Design, and Civil Engineering. NBE has 19 tenured/tenure-track, and non-tenured faculty. The Bachelor of Science of Civil Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the Urban Planning and Design program by the Planning Accreditation Board, and the Bachelor of Architecture program, which is starting in Fall 2024, will be pursuing accreditation by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. NBE includes five undergraduate programs, two graduate programs, and three graduate certificate programs (including a Master's level Structures certificate), along with a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering and participating in the UMKC interdisciplinary Ph.D. program. The Division currently has 250 undergraduate and 50 graduate students with significant growth expected in the next five years.

NBE leads a Tier 1 USDOT University Transportation Center, Environmentally Responsible Transportation Center for Communities of Concern (https://transportation.umkc.edu/), the UMKC Center for Neighborhoods (https://cfn.umkc.edu/), and a member of the Missouri Center for Transportation Innovation (https://mcti.missouri.edu/) a four-campus transportation partnership with the Missouri Department of Transportation. With over $14M in ongoing research from NSF, USDOT, MoDOT, DOD, USACE, and the Kauffman Foundation, amongst others, NBE seeks a person with a desire to have a track record of significant future external funding.

UMKC is also home to the Missouri Institute for Defense and Energy (MIDE) which consists of faculty, professional staff and studies from a range of academic disciplines to bridge academia and industry. MIDE is founded on bridging fundamental physics with applied engineering to solve longstanding challenges in the defense, energy, and related commercial sectors. As of 2023, MIDE has secured $60M in externally awarded grants and contracts, and supports over 100 students, faculty, and staff. In 2015, MIDE was presented with the R&D100 award for a defense technology that led to two small businesses and two licensed patents.

Job Description

The Division of Natural and Built Environment at the University of Missouri- Kansas City invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level with a structural engineering/engineering mechanics emphasis with an interest in the application of novel materials in structural engineering/bridge application, computational mechanics, infrastructure sustainability, and resiliency in multi-hazard environments or other closely related areas. Applicants must possess Professional Engineering licensure or be able to be licensed within the State of Missouri within 12 months of starting.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a related field is required by the time of appointment.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate:

• Eligibllity for the rank of Assistant Professor at UMKC in the Division of NBE.

• Ability to obtain significant external research funding.

• Experience with collaborative and multidisciplinary research and education programs.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills to engage program constituencies.

• Understanding of national and global trends in civil engineering and related fields.

Anticipated Hiring Range

This position is 9-month, ranked, tenure-track full-time faculty position with benefits to begin Fall 2025 semester. Salary is negotiable and commensurate with rank, success in externally funded research, credentials, and experience.
