Position description

The UCLA Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine (DAPM), in tandem with the Division of Molecular Medicine (DMM), is inviting applications for an Assistant Project Scientist to become part of a growing team performing research on sex differences in pulmonary hypertension. Pulmonary hypertension disproportionally affects more females as compared to males. The project involves research on the roles of sex chromosomes and sex hormones driving the pathophysiology of pulmonary hypertension. The project will be focused on unraveling the mechanisms behind dysfunction of the pulmonary vessels and right ventricular heart failure in pulmonary hypertension by using bioinformatics, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology and cutting-edge animal models of heart and lung disease. The project has a strong multidisciplinary character with multiple (inter)national collaborations.

The role of the future Assistant Project Scientist will include but are not limited to
  • Applicant will be performing experiments and initial data analysis
  • Applicant will advise investigators regarding the most current and appropriate research methods for testing research hypotheses.
  • The applicant will respond to data analyses requests from investigators on an as-needed basis and communicate with collaborators.
  • Applicant will prepare summaries, graphs, tables and interpretation of data for periodic reports, publications and presentations.
  • Applicant will contribute to planning and submitting of grants, and the preparation of manuscripts.
  • Applicant will supervise work conducted by research assistants and/or graduate students and postdocs.
  • Applicant will attend and present their research in internal and external research meetings, journal clubs, and invited faculty seminars.
  • Applicant will manage and maintain collaborative relations between all investigators involved in this project

  • Required experience and skills
  • The minimum educational requirement is a PhD in molecular and cellular cardiovascular biology or related fields.
  • Excellent publication track record of basic science and preclinical studies in cardiovascular disease
  • Experience in grant writing and acquisition
  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills are required
  • Experience working with experimental animal models is required
  • Highly experienced in advanced analyses of animal echocardiography and cardiopulmonary physiological data
  • Must be highly experienced in utilizing a wide array of molecular technologies such as qPCR, FACS, FISH, single cell RNA sequencing, immunohistochemistry, RNA interference
  • Must have high level of knowledge and experience in in vitro modeling such as primary cell isolation and co-culture systems
  • Must be highly experienced in designing and planning research studies and methodology
  • Experience with bioinformatics and statistical analyses is desirable
