The Opportunity:

The Associate Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, Belonging, and Engagement reports to, and will work closely with the Vice President of Inclusive Excellence to promote an equitable, welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for all members of the VCU community. The AVP will lead and develop programs and initiatives to strengthen VCU's commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity (EID) and collaborate across student initiatives promoting belongingness, inclusivity, and success. The AVP will also work to strengthen VCU's organizational culture to promote values of respect, care, and inclusion.

The AVP is expected to be a creative and thoughtful leader in equity, inclusion, and diversity; demonstrate competencies in training, design, and management; and successfully work within the university community to build collaborative partnerships with other units.

Typical Duties

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Work closely with the VP to develop and implement a sustainable EID model for the Division that will advance VCU's strategic priorities;
  • Develop plans to implement and evaluate equity, inclusion, and diversity (EID) goals in alignment with Quest 2028; Identify metrics to measure program success and outcomes;
  • Identify, develop, implement, and evaluate programs that increase students' engagement, sense of belonging, and inclusion;
  • Develop and support initiatives that strengthen climate and culture among students and employees;
  • Assess and implement institutional needs for learning opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to create sustainable individual and institutional change;
  • Serve on university committees that require the Division's representation;
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and activities of Centers and Institutes;
  • Supervise staff (e.g., Director of Inclusive Education and others (TBD);
  • Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of an Inclusive Excellence Fellows Program for students;
  • Work with departments, schools, and major units to identify opportunities and solutions that align with initiatives of equity, diversity, and inclusion and to advance a campus climate in which all students, faculty, and staff are welcomed, respected, seen, heard, valued, and supported.
  • Serve as the Division's point of contact with the VCU Health System's leadership to share resources and expertise, ensuring alignment as One VCU.
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned.
