DESCRIPTION

The Athletic Trainer uses skills as a seasoned, experienced athletic training professional with a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures; resolves a wide range of issues. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

Serve as Athletic Trainer to about 30 teams within the Sports Clubs Program within the Campus Recreation Department. Supervise (under the direction of the Competitive Sports Director) the prevention, evaluation, treatment and care of all sport club related injuries. When necessary, make injury referrals to appropriate medical personnel. Recondition and rehabilitate athletes on referral from physicians through the use of appropriate physical agents and therapeutic devices.

Update coaches regularly on the status of injured athletes. Assist in the operation of the athletic training facilities. Maintain records and files on all aspects of athletic training operation. Perform a variety of administrative duties in support of the Sports Clubs Program. Help develop and supervise an organized, instruction-based program of athletic training for student interns.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be NATA Certified, with minimum of 1 year's post-degree experience in athletic training.
  • Computer skills in programs relevant to job duties.
  • Thorough skills associated with athletic injury prevention and the administration of therapeutic modalities, devices, and rehabilitation techniques, as well as of first-aid, athletic equipment, and injury assessment and treatment.
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive matters involving athletic injuries and treatments.
  • Thorough knowledge of electronic medical records systems.
  • For positions associated with Sports Medicine, must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres, and, at all times, avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
  • Strong ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with others, including athletes, team physicians, faculty, staff and others in the athletic department.
  • Strong skills necessary to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Strong ability to organize and prioritize work assignments and complete assignments within required timelines.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills needed to work with a diverse client group.
  • Strong manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine.
  • Knowledge of sound coaching principles and techniques for a variety of sports as they apply to athletic injury prevention.
  • Knowledge of sound teaching techniques necessary to train and instruct athletic trainer students.
  • Knowledge of organizational and management principles as they apply to the development of athletic training operations.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be NATA Certified, with minimum of 1 year's post-degree experience in athletic training.
  • Must have current ARC/AHA First Aid and CPR/AED certifications (Instructor-level certifications preferred).
  • Job Offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance of Background Check (Live Scan) results.
  • 'In Training Room' hours and 'At Event Or Practices' hours will be set by the Competitive Sports Director, and will include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Must have flexible schedule and be available to travel, to assist at away events.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to attend off-site events.
  • This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the CANRA policy and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.
Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $67,200 - $119,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $32.18 - $57.28
