Under the direction of the Chief Counsel, Deputy Chief Counsel, and Assistant Chief Counsels the Attorney IV will handle the most difficult and sensitive legal issues involving the Department of State Hospitals (DSH). The Attorney IV is a legal specialist on the Sexual Violent Predator (SVP) Act, the Bagley-Keene Open Meeting Act, and issues related to placement of SVPs in DSH's Conditional Release Program (CONREP). The Attorney IV is involved with development of litigation strategy, conducting legal research, and opining on the most complex legal issues facing DSH. The Attorney IV must operate with minimal direction.

Working Conditions
- Extensive travel may be required to advise and collaborate with DSH hospitals and facilities and to attend and participate in court and administrative hearings in all counties in the State of California and to meet with staff, witnesses, and others as the operational needs of the department dictate.
- Hybrid telework is available based on operational needs and is subject to change, with a current minimum two in-office work day requirement per week. In-office work requirements for new employees may increase during the first thirty (30) days of employment based on training needs.

- Knowledge of rules of evidence, welfare and institutions code, and penal code.
- Well-developed analytical and communication skills, both verbal and written, superior interpersonal skills, and tact.
- Advanced legal research, writing, analytical, and advocacy skills.
- Demonstrable experience in exercising sound judgment and a high degree of discretion in presenting recommendations on highly complex and sensitive legal issues.
- Superior work habits, the ability to complete work under deadlines, and ability to adjust to shifting priorities.
