Job Goals:
  • To carry out the goals and objectives of the school band program.
  • To instruct band students for the development of their individual musical skills and for the development of the school's band program.
  • To provide leadership in character development and musicianship.

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Valid Alabama professional educator certificate in the area of instrumental music or other applicable subject area.
  3. Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  4. Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  5. Ability to plan, lead, manage, evaluate and implement programs for student success.
  6. Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  7. Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups, for the purpose of maximizing student achievement.
  8. Ability to organize and supervise students, volunteers or designated staff members; manage budgets; and develop curriculum and programming specific to the needs of students as designated.
  9. Knowledge and skill in the development and operation of a school instrumental music program.
  10. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and colleagues.
  11. Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  12. Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  13. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  14. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.


Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  2. Serves as a role model and works toward the development of good character and desirable attitudes among students.
  3. Establishes a positive classroom climate and effectively manages band and instrumental music instruction within that environment.
  4. Utilizes innovative teaching techniques and technology as a teaching tool to plan and provide instruction; acts as a facilitator for students in the use of technology in the classroom.
  5. Displays technical competence in band direction.
  6. Develops and implements a program of instruction based upon the goals and standards of the National Association for Music Education.
  7. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  8. Develops an appropriate and justifiable system for the evaluation and grading of students under his/her supervision.
  9. Prepares the band and other instrumental groups for appropriate public performances.
  10. Directs the organization and supervision of students during classes and at public events.
  11. Works with other band directors and school officials in the school system for a continuous and correlated development through all levels of band instruction.
  12. Coordinates the preparation and distribution of materials that inform students and their parents of the requirements for band participation, band policies, schedules and related program information.
  13. Attends meetings, practices, games, events and activities associated with assigned band direction responsibilities.
  14. Works with the principal, school staff and boosters in improving and maintaining equipment, uniforms and band resources.
  15. Demonstrates professional and ethical behavior.
  16. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of child development.
  17. Demonstrates knowledge of the prescribed curriculum, current educational research and technological tools; exhibits skills in implementing the best instructional practices and varied teaching methods to address student learning styles and achieve meaningful and measurable outcomes in accordance with course of study guidelines and student learning objectives.
  18. Utilizes technology to plan and provide instruction and facilitate student learning.
  19. Models appropriate and innovative use of technology for students.
  20. Facilitates and monitors the integration of technology in the classroom.
  21. Provides modifications for students with special needs, including exceptional education students and students who have limited proficiency in English as required.
  22. Selects, develops, modifies and/or adapts materials and resources which support learning objectives and address students' varying learning styles and backgrounds.
  23. Establishes routines and uses appropriate behavior management techniques.
  24. Creates a learning climate that is challenging.
  25. Participates in administration of state and/or standardized testing as assigned.
  26. Organizes procedures, practices, materials, and routines for the effective use of instructional time and for the completion of administration activities.
  27. Uses ongoing assessment to monitor student progress; interprets and uses data (including, but not limited to standardized and other test results) for instructional planning and program evaluation.
  28. Communicates high learning expectations for all students and establishes learning outcomes that are relative to real world experiences.
  29. Uses appropriate techniques and strategies to enhance the application of critical, creative and evaluative thinking capabilities of students.
  30. Provides instruction of safety procedures and proper handling of materials and equipment.
  31. Fosters student responsibility, appropriate social behavior, integrity, valuing of cultural diversity, and respect for self and others through role modeling and learning activities.
  32. Supervises and/or assists with extracurricular and co-curricular activities as assigned.
  33. Supports school improvement initiatives by active participation in school activities, events, ceremonies, services and programs.
  34. Engages in personal professional growth, adheres to professional standards, and demonstrates professional ethics, sound judgment and leadership.
  35. Maintains confidentiality regarding student/school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law.
  36. Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  37. Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
  38. Maintains and submits required reports, records and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  39. Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system.
  40. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies and state, federal and local laws.
  41. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures; prepares for substitutes according to Board policies and school procedures.
  42. Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

Terms of Employment/Salary: As established by the Board and applicable state law.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
