We are actively recruiting for a Biorepository Research Coordinator I to join our team at MedStar Health Research Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. This position is primarily Monday through Friday with 8-hour shifts. Exact hours vary and are dependent on surgery schedule, but typical hours are between 6am to 6pm. Position also requires rotating weekday and weekend freezer coverage.

Under moderate supervision of the Biorepository Clinical Program Manager, the Biorepository Research Coordinator I is dedicated to acquisition, delivery, and processing of human biological samples for research. The Biorepository Research Coordinator I is responsible for specimen and clinical data collections from patients who consent to the biorepository study at multiple MedStar Health sites. Carries out efficient daily operations as well as supporting growth into future areas of service.

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.
Experience
  • 1-2 years experience in related field required
  • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must possess basic understanding of Good Clinical Practices (GCP) provided by the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH).
  • Pre-screens potential research participants to determine their initial eligibility and interest in specimen collection(s) and adheres to important guidelines to protect the privacy of the patients; screen, recruit, and enroll research participants.
  • Ensures proper collection, processing, and shipment of biospecimens (e.g., centrifuge, freezing, refrigeration); maintains current Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training regarding bloodborne pathogens; maintains International Air and Transportation (IATA) training for routine packaging, labeling, and transporting of biological materials.
  • Biospecimen Acquisition, Delivery, and Processing: Observes surgery, and documents surgical and anesthesiologic data points, including resection times while in the operating room; works closely with anesthesiologist to obtain blood and urine samples during surgery; receives resected tumor/tissue from surgeon/care provider and responsible for timely transport of tissue to pathology; works closely with pathology team to obtain all excess tissue available for research and plans; plans and performs dissection of tissue specimen according to standard operating procedures; processes tissue for storage and distribution to partner sites, collaborators and sponsor; transports blood, urine, and tissue to the central laboratories for processing and storage.
  • Clinical Annotation of Biospecimen: Reviews MedStar Health's electronic health record to confirm data accuracy and abstract outcomes; works with team across many sites nationally and internationally to ensure all data is coded correctly for global database, updates database regularly; registers tissue samples and associated data MedStar Health, sponsor, and other (e.g., Georgetown University) databases; regularly performs quality assurance and control checks.
