Job Summary

The Biomedical Research Core Facilities (BRCF), as part of the Medical School's Office of Research (OoR), has an opening in the Transgenic Animal Model Core. The BRCF Transgenic Core was established in 1989 to provide access to transgenic animal technology in an efficient & effective manner. Researchers consult with the Core in all phases of genome editing, transgenic and gene targeting research from experimental design to mouse breeding. The Transgenic Core also offers a full suite of cryopreservation and assisted reproduction (IVF) services. The Core's mission is to provide access to complex technology that allows Principal Investigators to focus on their research instead of developing the tools for their research.

Responsibilities*

Provide support with assisted reproductive technology program including:
In vitro fertilization of mouse eggs with mouse sperm.
Cryopreservation of mouse sperm and embryos.
Surgical transfer of embryos to surrogate female mice.
Occasional weekend and weekly night work for superovulation treatment.

Assist with molecular biology program.
Perform methods including DNA purification, PCR reactions, and NGS library prep for genotype and CRISPR gRNA activity.

Animal Colony and Room Management
Manage the mouse and rat transgenic production colonies
Tissue collection and tagging for identification of mice and rats
Tissue sample preparation for DNA extraction
Weaning and distribution of mice and rats to on-campus and off-campus clients
Superovulation for production of embryos for genetic manipulation.
Postoperative care
Inspection preparation and compliance to OSEH, AAALAC and IACUC
Prepare and manage Animal Use Protocols, animal purchases, animal transfers and exports

Provide customer service including communicating with clients about projects and animal breeding plans to maintain their animal colony strains used in their research; general laboratory maintenance

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree and 6+ years of paid laboratory experience
  • Demonstrated experience in molecular biology procedures such as DNA purification, PCR, molecular cloning, and NGS library preparation
  • Prior knowledge and experience working in a research animal management electronic system
  • Significant paid experience with animal handling, sampling, husbandry, and breeding
  • Demonstrated experience of highly organized record keeping
  • Highly developed communication skills with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Attention to detail, punctuality, and occasional weekend work required
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision as required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with others in a collaborative environment
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft office software

Desired Qualifications*
  • Previous experience either working in a transgenic core or in a laboratory that has used transgenic rodents in research.
  • Demonstrated experience working with mice and rats.
  • Demonstrated experience in tissue cell culture.
