Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The Division of Facilities Management functions are to design, construct, maintain and operate the physical facilities of the University. The number one objective of the department is to provide and maintain facilities that will enhance and support the mission and academic goals of the University. Our approach is centered upon providing a superior level of customer service.

Primary Purpose of the Position:

This is skilled work in the planting, cultivation, and care of shrubs, trees, plants, and grass in yard and surrounding areas of state buildings and institutions. Work is performed in accordance with instructions from administrative supervisor; however, the Horticultural Specialist must determine the care and treatment necessary to maintain grounds and shrubs in good condition. Non-routine problems concerning the selection, placement, care, and treatment of plants to assure a beautiful and orderly landscape are referred to a supervisor or nursery dealer for advice. Work may include the supervision of a small number of employees. Work is inspected and evaluated on the basis of appearance of the grounds.

Description of Work Continued:

General Maintenance Skills Knowledge - 60%:
  • Performs a range of duties, to include mowing turf, edging sidewalks/plant beds, trimming trees and shrubs, fertilizing and mulching during the growing season.
  • Assist with planting flowers, bulbs, trees, shrubs.
  • Maintaining university grounds by keeping them free from trash, litter, and debris.
  • Preventing and eliminating weeds
  • Operates assigned equipment in the performance of duties.
  • Assists in the application of pesticides.
  • Required to assist with snow/ice removal, debris, and downed tree removal during inclement weather.
  • May be required to perform grounds maintenance duties without supervision.
  • Required to perform grounds tasks in all types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis and occasional heavier loads.
  • Required to report to work during adverse weather or during other University emergencies even when the University is closed.
  • Makes minor repairs/maintenance to mowers and other equipment.
  • Maintains paths and/ or road surfaces.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Safety, Security and Health Compliance - 20%:
  • Inspects vehicles/equipment and work areas and corrects potential hazards.
  • Attends monthly safety training/meeting.
  • Ensures that personal protective equipment is used to prevent injury to self and others.
  • Notify supervisor of safety concerns and make recommendations for resolution.
  • Ensure that safety policies, procedures and regulations are followed.
Customer Service - 10%:
  • Anticipate customer needs, address and resolve concerns promptly and respectfully.
  • Monitor the process to ensure customers are well satisfied.
  • Recognize how work activities and behavior impact clients and the University.
  • Demonstrate ability to make recommendations resulting in improved processes within monetary constraints.
Interpersonal Skills - 10%:
  • Share expertise and knowledge with co-workers.
  • Communicate with co-workers in a manner that allows work to be completed.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with supervisor and co-workers to encourage and support communication and teamwork.
  • Manage resources to complete assignments even during peak periods, i.e. time management, completing priority assignments first, ensuring that all tools and equipment needed are taken to job site, planning tasks around adverse weather events, etc.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalency.

Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

A valid driver's license. Must have an acceptable driving record, which may require up to five years of driving experience with no more than one minor fault accident or violation in the past three years. The University will review the driver's license and records periodically for compliance.

Knowledge skills and abilities:

Customer Service: Anticipates customers' needs and resolves concerns promptly and respectfully.

Interpersonal Skills: Manages resources and co-workers to distribute workload even during peak periods.

Dependability: Arrives at work, staff meetings and other functions on time. Follows University, facilities Management, and work area annual and sick leave policies. Notifies supervisor before the beginning of shift if you are going to be late or absent. B Notify supervisor well in advance of any upcoming absences.

Initiative: Takes actions to improve performance of self and others, goes beyond what is called for to complete a task, and seeks solutions to problems before being asked to do so.

Teamwork: Willingly cooperates with supervisors and co-workers to accomplish assigned tasks. Maintains a positive attitude towards supervisor, co-workers and the job. Respectfully discusses most effective way to perform tasks and then works together to get the job done.

Attention to Detail: Ability to accomplish tasks and processes accurately and completely.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five (5) to ten (10) years experience in landscaping

Valid CDL license

North Carolina Pesticide License
