The Business Analyst will be instrumental in the transformation efforts of our research enterprise by developing and guiding strategies for workflow processes in the Nurses' Health Studies, a respected and far-reaching investigation into women's health. The overall objective for this role is to improve the organization and efficiency of our data infrastructure. The NHS research platform has been well served for decades by a homegrown computing setup, however, this legacy system is showing its age, affecting productivity. We are now rebuilding our data systems into platforms of the future.

We seek a talented and experienced Business Analyst to 1) document existing workflows for data collection, management, and use; 2) identify new solutions that will improve efficiency, and reduce costs and vulnerabilities; and 3) evaluate potential third-party integration or adaptations to available internal systems. The ideal candidate will excel at self-direction, task management, creative problem-solving, and iterative communication with stakeholders. The Business Analyst must be someone who thrives in a dynamic academic research environment.

The Nurses' Health Studies (NHS), renowned for epidemiological research of chronic disease, encompass four primary studies with over 300,000 participants followed for over four decades. The NHS research platform includes extensive questionnaire data covering disease, lifestyle, and nutrition, a biobank with millions of specimens and thousands of associated biomarkers, GIS-based exposure measures, imaging, and a wide range of disease outcomes. NHS researchers are among the world's foremost health researchers from Mass General Brigham, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and other top institutions worldwide. Our data infrastructure team includes experts with decades of experience and dedication to the NHS, working alongside world-class scientists and recent graduates. NHS researchers have published thousands of scientific papers and have helped improve the treatment and prevention of chronic disease.

Qualifications

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Strategize and lead the replacement of a legacy system that relies on a custom programming language to manage research participants and use of their data
  • Attain project goals through individual contributions and successful development team leadership
  • Analyze operating protocols and practices to draw relevant conclusions and identify opportunities for improvementAssist with the documentation of existing processes and propose improved, streamlined workflows
  • Develop and oversee an integration plan for new processes and tools, in collaboration with IT, including 3rd party software evaluation and negotiation of pricing plans if required
  • Meet regularly with stakeholders to assess requirements, project goals, and solution validation
  • Apply both strategic and hands-on efforts when delivering solution action plans to stakeholders
  • Understand and maintain health data compliance requirements


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Management, Information Technology or related field
  • Self-directed with proven project leadership
  • 3+ years in business analysis or related roles
  • 3+ years of SQL experience3+ years of experience working in UNIX / Linux environment
  • 3+ years of scripting or programming experience with Python and/or Java, including the use of APIs or web services
  • Proven ability to create detailed and clear process documentation of complex data systems
  • Demonstrated experience working with stakeholders with diverse skills to collect requirements, design, create and validate solutionsUnderstands the system development life cycle, project management, and requirements, design and test techniquesUnderstanding of health data compliance, security plans, data protection, and the types of controls associated with them
  • Comfortable working with multiple database platforms such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB, etc.
  • Familiarity with R and SAS a plus
  • Familiarity with Lean Six Sigma a plus
