Job Description and Duties

Under the supervision of a CT Maintenance Supervisor, Leadworker or other qualified crew member, the CT Highway Maintenance Worker performs miscellaneous labor while performing duties associated with repairing and maintaining the District's sign, striping and stencil marking systems. The incumbent will work with a crew that travels extensively throughout the district and will work out of town up to 80% of the time. This position is represented under collective bargaining.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions

Position located at 1250 Spruce St. Bishop, CA 93514, Inyo County

Weather conditions vary from a cold, windy, and wet winter climate to a very hot and predominately dry summer climate. Temperature extremes can range from below freezing in the winter to well over 100 degrees on a consistent basis in the summer. Occasional heavy thunderstorms can be expected in the summer months and heavy rain is to be expected in the winter. Incumbent may be scheduled to work night shifts during inclement weather conditions, this includes but is not limited to November, December, January, February, March, and April; or as scheduled by the Maintenance Supervisor.

The incumbent will be required to travel extensively throughout the district and will work out of town up to 80% of the time. The normal workweek is Monday through Thursday 0630-1700 on a 4/10 schedule. Please note that the schedule may change at the discretion of the District Management or Supervisor. May be required to work overtime, which may include weekends and holidays due to storms, emergencies, special work projects, or when the Supervisor deems that it is in the best interest of the State to work overtime. The incumbent will be expected to respond to emergency call-outs, may be required to work overtime including nights, and weekends, may be required to work temporary and/or intermittent varied work shifts be loaned to other cost centers to help during storm events and other natural disasters and with normal maintenance operations.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
