DESCRIPTION

Under direct and constant supervision, perform phlebotomy to collect blood samples from adult participants in several multisite research projects focusing on risks for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C (HCV) and SARS COVID -19. Follow protocol for a number of research studies with different blood collection and processing requirement. Maintain collection records; label and log samples. Transfer blood using pipette; process samples using a centrifuge and aliquot. Prepare samples for storage, shipment and transport to UCSD Laboratories and various reference labs. Help monitor and maintain the inventory of necessary supplies. Maintain high standards of laboratory hygiene and practice universal precautions in handling human blood. In all study related activities, they will ensure: a) completeness and integrity of data and laboratory collections during and after each participant visit; b) that confidentiality is strictly maintained. Other duties assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) by the State of California.
  • Bilingual skills fluently in Spanish/English verbally and written.
  • Theoretical knowledge as typically acquired by a Bachelor's degree in public health, psychology or similar field.
  • Ability to work one-on-one comfortably and respectfully with active drug users.
  • Knowledge of harm reduction principles and practices.
  • Experience conducting working in collaboration with community based organizations.
  • Ability to comply with confidentiality and human subjects requirements in the context of medical/public health research.
  • Knowledge of how to safely and effectively store and transport biological specimen to various locations/laboratories. Knowledge of (and high standards of) laboratory hygiene, biohazard handling, and universal precautions.
  • Experience meeting deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and productively as part of an academic research team.
  • Strives at all times to present a positive attitude and pleasant, professional demeanor.
  • Possesses CPR/BLS Healthcare Provider (recognized by AHA or equivalent).
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be willing to work various times and locations based on business needs.
  • Must be comfortable working with participants with infectious diseases such as Coronavirus Disease (COVID), HIV, Tuberculosis (TB), and HCV and participants with history of drug abuse with limited venous access.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $68,507 - $68,507 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $32.81 - $32.81
