Responsibilities

This position serves as an Industrial Safety & Health Engineer (Chemical Inventory Management Officer). Under general supervision, perform a variety of tasks in support of Research and Laboratory Safety Programs with a focus on chemical inventory and adherence to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) lab standard. Work with laboratory personnel to integrate chemical safety into all lab operations and promote safe work practices.
  • Chemical Inventory Management: Assisting in the development and implementation of the chemical inventory program to meet the University and regulatory requirements. Establishes documents, guidelines, and procedures. Receive, barcode, and audit chemicals. Assist in the management of the Chemical Inventory program including maintenance of chemical inventory databases. Conduct risk assessments with laboratory stakeholders in areas that use biological, chemical, and physical hazards and provide technical advice on the safe handling, storage, and use of hazardous materials. Perform annual chemical inventory reconciliation and obtain/maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) as needed.
  • Compliance and Training: Conduct assessments, audits and inspections for laboratories, risk analysis and other research areas. Collect hazardous waste from laboratories as needed. Train faculty, staff, and students regarding the use of the chemical inventory system & laboratory safety.
  • Research and Laboratory Safety: Injury and illness reduction including incident response and investigation. Perform small clean-up.
  • Support new Principal Investigator (PI) and Department Safety Representative (DSR) Programs. May supervise EHS student employees. Interact with campus officials, local, state and federal authorities as needed to ensure programs are achieving compliance through implementation of best practices while maintaining budgetary constraints.
  • Remain constantly vigilant to changes or advances that may impact EH&S associated programs through proactive methods such as: audits, research, interactions with colleagues at related institutions and by attending professional courses or society meetings. Immediately report any findings that may affect University programs to supervisor and assist in determining and implementing necessary policy changes to ensure best practices are implemented.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and two years of experience; or a high school diploma/equivalency and six years of experience.

(Note: or a combination of post high school education and experience equal to six years.)

  • Ability to develop and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Knowledge of and ability to identify safety hazards and necessary safety precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Skill in preparing clear and concise reports, policies, procedures, correspondences, and other written materials.
