The Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety at Laurel Ridge Community College serves on the leadership team reporting to the Vice President for Finance & Administration. This role is responsible for overseeing safety, security, and emergency management operations across two campuses and one center for the college. It requires making informed, independent decisions, leveraging extensive knowledge and experience in law enforcement and emergency response.

The position oversees comprehensive police operations, providing direct supervision to two police sergeants who manage teams of campus police officers and security guards. Key responsibilities encompass performance management, leadership in police and emergency management operations, and administrative duties that include compliance with FOIA and the Clery Act and policy and procedural review. Emphasizing community policing, the Laurel Ridge Police are tasked with cultivating collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders and external law enforcement agencies and emergency responders. This role is expected to integrate with the college community and be highly visible and actively participate on various college committees and workgroups. Regular communication with students and employees is an essential component of this position’s responsibilities, reflecting its critical role in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment.

Classified: Compensation and Benefits
The hiring range for this position is $67,186.00-$97,420.00. Salary will commensurate with competencies and experience. The position is classified staff and as such is eligible for the benefits package offered by the Commonwealth of Virginia for state agencies. Special Assignments

KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Must be able to obtain required law enforcement certifications within 90 days of employment as sanctioned by the Department of Criminal Justice Services.
  • Must be able to function mentally and physically under stress and emergency situations.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to plan, organize and direct enforcement activities to achieve goals and objectives of college.
  • General working knowledge of statute enforcement, crisis management planning and considerable law enforcement, as well as security and safety concepts, principles, procedures and techniques.
  • Must have the skills to handle firearms and operate a motor vehicle safely.
  • Demonstrated ability to give oral and written instructions to react appropriately in routine and emergency situations.
  • Must be able to gather information and write factual reports and to elicit compliance with policies, rules and regulations.
  • Must never have been convicted of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude.
  • Current and responsible supervisory or managerial experience in law enforcement.




Additional Considerations
  • CPR or 1st Aid Certification preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Act and Title IX
  • Working knowledge of National Incident Management System ( NIMS ) and Incident Command System ( ICS ) protocols and experience in developing emergency response planning documents.

Travel as per any required duties of the position, such as to sites/campuses and any training. Ability to cover assignments throughout the college service region as necessary for the job is required.
