Position Summary

The Department of OB/Gyn at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) to join our team. The Clinical Coordinator II / RN will report directly to the Practice Operations Manager with a dotted line to the Chief of Service and the Division Administrator. This nursing position will serve as a key member of the patient care team to support the OB/Gyn populations we serve. The Clinical Coordinator II / RN performs nursing duties consistent with NYS nursing scope of practice related to the support of the day-to-day clinical operations of the assigned practice. These duties include, but are not limited to, Triaging calls and assist with EPIC clinical in-basket messages/telephone encounters and advise appropriate clinicians, assisting physicians with patient treatments /procedures and department specific therapies., tracks lab results to confirm that patient has had appropriate follow up as ordered by the physician in the patients plan of care. This position will work closely with multiple providers as well as other clinical and administrative staff to deliver an excellent patient experience that contributes to positive health outcomes for patients and a work culture of kindness, collaboration, integrity, accountability, and excellence.

Responsibilities

Administrative Duties:
  • Collaborates with Physicians, clinical and administrative staff to provide inclusive patient care.
  • Assist in improving and maintaining the existing laboratory and pathology tracking system.
  • Obtain pre-certification/pre-authorizations for medications, services and testing in a timely manner when necessary
  • Work closely with the Practice Operations, Medical Director of Outpatient Practices and Clinical Nurse Director ensuring all competencies and clinical responsibilities are completed accurately.
  • Assist in development, plan and implementation of departmental policies and procedures that will support the clinical outpatient practice.
  • Coordinate patient flow with the physicians and other staff to ensure a positive patient experience including chaperoning when appropriate.
  • Actively participate in departmental clinical meetings regarding policy changes and update.
  • Attend all regular staff meetings and continuing professional development courses as requested
  • Other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
  • Serve on relevant committees, task forces, and workgroup within Columbia Primary Care and the Organization
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned by physicians, Practice Manager and Division Administrator.

Clinical Duties:

There are skills and responsibilities that are common across Columbia Obgyn care. The Registered Nurse (RN) may perform any or all these skills and responsibilities:
  • Triage calls and assist with EPIC clinical in-basket messages/telephone encounters and advise appropriate clinicians.
  • Tracks lab results to confirm that patient has had appropriate follow up as ordered by the physician in the patients plan of care.
  • Assist physicians with patient treatments/procedures and department specific therapies.
  • Telephone, My Chart and in-person triage (for symptom management) under minimal supervision as appropriate.
  • Review and act on test results (lab, x-ray).
  • Assist with medication management (e.g., medication renewals) inclusive of medication prior authorizations as needed. Administer immunizations as an adjunct to LPN staff.
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Assist with management of urgent and emergent patient care situations.
  • Assist with the management of patients with multiple chronic health conditions, acute episodes of care, behavioral health challenges while promoting and supporting prevention and wellness. Perform patient outreach related to gaps in care.
  • May float to other Practices on as needed for business continuity. Occasionally provide assistance in the clinical duties of LPN staff in the interest of patient care.
  • Notifies patients of normal results as determined by the physician either telephone or Connect patient portal.
  • Acts as a resource for patients requesting lab results and requisitions.
  • Ensure patient safety standards remain intact throughout higher level practice procedures.
  • Prepare and administer prescribed medication in accordance with standards.
  • Ensure timely delivery of specimens to appropriate designation.

People:
  • Work alongside our clinical time (includes but not limited to PA's/LPN's/ MD's).

Compliance:
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality according to HIPAA requirements at all times.
  • Keep current on all organizational and practice policies (e.g., infection control, HIPAA), goals, initiatives, and required trainings
  • Ensure that University and Department policies and procedures are followed.
  • Successfully complete all required university, hospital, and department trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned within professional scope of practice/training/education.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus three years of related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Current and unrestricted New York State RN license.
  • Excellent organizational abilities and computer skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to be a team player and work independently in a busy environment.
  • Basic Life Support certified.
  • Travel between clinical sites may be required depending on need.
  • Duties performed require exposure to blood, bodily fluid, and tissue. Incumbent in expected to perform and/or/assist in emergency care and/or first aid as needed.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a culturally diverse staff and patient/family population demonstrating tact, respect, and sensitivity.
  • Must be an engaged and positive team member demonstrating collaboration, inclusion, reliability, punctuality, and adaptability to new and changing situations including helping peers adapt to new situations.
  • Must be a motivated individual with a positive mindset and exceptional work ethic.
  • Must successfully complete systems training requirements.

Required Qualifications:
  • Must have a current New York State Registered Nurse License and maintain and renew when necessary.

Preferred Qualifications
  • OBGYN experience preferred
  • 2-4 years of OB/GYN experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • ACLS Preferred
