Job Summary

The Bohnert Lab within Michigan Medicine Department of Anesthesiology is looking for an Analyst for our new NIMH project. The Comprehensive Mobile Precision Approach for Scalable Solutions in Mental Health Treatment (COMPASS) project is focused on the effects of machine learning, wearable and mobile technology to both reduce mental health symptoms and predict response to clinic-based treatments.

The Analyst will perform data management, programming, and analysis using participant quantitative data, electronic health records (EHR), mobile phone sensor data, wearable device data (e.g., Fitbit), and other data sources. The individual in this position will be tasked with managing and linking these data sources to allow for novel research. Additionally, this individual will assist researchers in determining the appropriate analytical methodology to meet their needs, use various statistical packages, and summarize and interpret statistical results.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to work independently and efficiently and be involved in multiple projects at the same time. The candidate must understand both database and research complexities and apply problem-solving techniques utilizing existing and emerging scientific knowledge.

Who We Are

The Michigan Neuroscience Institute was established in 1955 to bring together investigators from across the University of Michigan campus to probe the mysteries of the brain on a cellular, molecular, and behavioral level. Its 140 faculty and affiliate members seek to understand the function and dysfunction of the human brain.

Responsibilities*

This position involves a wide range of tasks including programming and statistical analysis using both existing data and newly collected data. Specifically, the position includes the following responsibilities:
  • Write, test and implement programs using statistical software to clean, manage, merge and analyze complex data sets (e.g., healthcare claims).
  • Implement programmatic methods to ensure data quality.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation of data and analysis files.
  • Participate as a team member in discussions on analysis and improvement of data collection, quality of data analyses, programming and documentation.
  • Develop and draft analysis plans.
  • Independently conduct appropriate data analyses.
  • Perform power calculations and estimate sample size.
  • Assist in the writing of manuscripts.
  • Work with collaborators to define scientific questions, formulate models and methods, and apply appropriate statistical methods and advise on presentation of results.

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in statistics, biostatistics, or related field.
  • At least 3 years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as cooperatively and manage multiple projects at the same time.
  • Demonstrated proficiency working with large datasets using statistical software programs (e.g., SAS preferred, but STATA, SPSS, and R are also acceptable).
  • Previous experience working with healthcare data.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint for the development of presentation materials.
  • Proven ability to write clear and concise technical documentation, summaries of various methodologies and descriptions of statistical results.
  • Excellent communication, both oral and written in English language, and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to learn new statistical methods, including, but not limited to, causal inference.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Master's degree in statistics, biostatistics, or related field.
  • Three or more years of experience using statistical software for database management and statistical analysis.
  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms and SQL programming.
  • Experience working with Fitbit data.
  • Experience with causal inference and G formulas.

Additional Information

This position is term-limited for about 2 years (ending August 2026) with the possibility of renewal based on need and available funding. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.
