Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION
Performs a full range of services as assigned under the general supervision of the Technologist, Supervisor and Assistant Director, the Director of Pathology and the Lab Administrator.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Performs laboratory tests with accuracy, efficiency and cost-effectiveness where he/she is trained under the supervision of a technologist, supervisor, manager or director, in accordance with KCH laboratory established procedure.
• Performs instrument maintenance, calibration and quality controls with a level of competence and within the guidelines of KCH laboratory established policy and procedure.
• Obtains and receives laboratory specimens.
• Performs standardized procedures both manual and automated; report results and maintains records of test examinations within the guidelines of policy and procedure of the KCHC laboratory (SOP).
• Correctly prepares reagents and test samples.
• Reports critical value results promptly and documents them immediately as per KCHC laboratory established guidelines.
• Recognizes common technical problems and is able to correct them under supervision.
• Performs phlebotomy procedures when necessary.
• Correctly prepares reagents and test samples.
• Enters and retrieves patient data accurately, utilizing the laboratory information system (LIS}.
• Maintains strict patient confidentiality at all times.
• Attends and participates in continuing education and in-service programs.
• Follows safety protocol at all times.
• Understands and practices the elements of the National Patient Safety Goals.
• Demonstrates knowledge of clinical laboratory terminology.
• Prepares packages for shipment within the guidelines of KCHC laboratory established policy and procedure.
• Addresses issues or situations that require immediate or additional attention and informs Supervisor or other appropriate leadership of such situations.
• Participates in internal/external quality assurance /performance improvement activities and programs, departmental and team/committee meetings, and facility-wide training.

Work Aids:
Includes the safe use and handling of toxic, infectious, fumes, electrical and other biohazardous substances.

Minimum Qualifications
1. VaIid certification as a clinical laboratory technician issued by the NYSED.

Special Note:
1. Successful completion of an appropriate training program for phlebotomy (satisfactory to the laboratory director) must be completed prior to an individual performing such work.
