Job Description
Purpose:
Under the direction of technical manager and supervisors, the technologist is responsible for day-to-day test performance and supervision as needed, order processing, and other required duties to maintain laboratory operations. He/she collaborates with other sections of the laboratory, as well as other departments within the institution, to provide the highest quality patient care.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
The [Clinical Laboratory Technologist] is charged with and responsible for:
1. Supervision and performance of day-to-day test procedures, including, but not limited to: ABO Group & Rh typing, Direct Antiglobulin Testing and Antibody Screen Testing and Antibody identification and Fetal Bleed Screen Testing, Antigen Typing and Antibody Elution and Crossmatch Testing, Donor Unit Retyping and Transfusion Reaction Work-Up.
2. Follow laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records. Knowledgeable about contents of policies and procedures (including changes) relevant to scope of their testing activities.
3. Perform tests, which require the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility, with a minimal supervision by the director or supervisor, in only those specialties, or subspecialties in which they are qualified by education, training and experience.
4. Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens, adhere to laboratory's safety and quality policies, and document all quality control activities.
5. Follow laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance and assure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
6. Delegate supervisory functions including but not limited to; training, competency, inventory management, follow up with critical values and identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results which must be corrected or escalated to the supervisor or director. In the event of non-conformances, ensuring that the results of test examinations are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly.
7. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratories established performance specifications.
8. Communicate pending and other tasks to fellow workers and supervisors as required to avoid safety and patient care issues and accomplish tasks within due course of time for efficient laboratory operations.
9. Brings problems and other pertinent issues to supervisor's attention in a timely manner and in event of non-conformities, ensures that results of test examinations are not reported until corrective actions taken and test system is properly functioning.
10. Complies with all safety and HIPAA issues and maintains environment of care standards.
11. Engage in QA PI programs, follow Laboratory and hospital safety procedures, report/document critical results to appropriate medical staff, communicate, and document corrected results to the appropriate medical staff.
12. Interacts cooperatively with colleagues within the facility toward institutional objectives.
13. Monitor environmental monitors and document lot number and expiration dates of the testing materials used.
14. Document results accurately in the LIS, complies with all safety and HIPAA issues and maintains environment of care standards.
15. Performs other duties assigned and or in an emergency necessary for the welfare of patients or the efficient operation of the hospital.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist issued by the NYSED; and
2. Candidates must also meet one of the qualification requirements of a laboratory supervisor as outlined in Title 1 0, Section 58-1.4 of the New York Public HeaIth Law.
