MGH Nutrition and Food Services is seeking a full-time Clinical Nutrition Manager for the MGH Cancer Center. Ideal candidates should possess CNM experience in an outpatient setting and over five years of clinical practice. A Master's Degree and advanced certifications such as CSO or CNSC are preferred.

CLINICAL MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages unit in absence of assistant director.
  • Interviews, hires, perform- counseling to termination- for RDs and staff.
  • Authorizes master schedule to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Mentors new staff during first year.
  • Acts as a clinical resource to staff on matters related to patient care.
  • Manages orientation of new staff, including competency-based training, as necessary.
  • Manages RD and staff time and payroll activities in UKG.
  • Reviews and evaluates clinical documentation, productivity, and job performance.
  • Writes and gives performance appraisals for RDs and staff.
  • Reviews staff professional development portfolios and guides staff on their preparation.
  • Analyzes and plans budgets, adjusts unit activities to meet unit goals.
  • Continually monitors Joint Commission and other regulatory agencies' requirements and implements changes at the unit level.
  • Collaborates with the assistant director in managing benchmarking activities including productivity.
  • Plans continuing staff education and directs staff on preparing and implementing competency-based training.
  • Actively participates on hospital-wide committees related to clinical nutrition.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of how process improvement is utilized to achieve bottom line goals.
  • Leads others to reach financial targets.
  • Guides staff and participates in research activities which advances the body of knowledge in their specialty areas.
  • Plans for development, evaluation, and update of department protocols for nutrition care.
  • Functions as a liaison to patient food service to integrate food service in the delivery of patient care.
  • Makes decisions related to foods patients may receive based on diet modification.
  • Reviews dietetic intern clinical rotations and recommends changes and updates to optimize learning experiences and manage resources efficiently.
  • Take a leadership role in the development of the disaster plan and executes as necessary.
  • Initiates, evaluates, and updates department protocols for nutrition care.
  • Identifies standards for making recommendations about tube feedings, infant formulas, and supplements considering evidence of efficacy and financial implications.
  • Assumes a leadership role in unit, departmental, and hospital wide initiatives designed to support the department and hospital mission and goals.
  • Sought as the expert within their specialty areas for medical nutrition interventions and resolution of issues within the MGH medical/allied health community.
  • Precepts MD's, RNs, RDs, and international students requesting nutrition education and clinical experience.
  • Evaluates the competency of clinical dietitians, clinical nutrition specialists, and senior clinical dietitians and provide feedback for their performance reviews.


CLINICIAN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrated clinical experience/competency in specialty area through one year experience in the specialty area, certification, and/or CEUs.
  • Demonstrated competency in evaluating/planning nutrition care for common and rarely seen disorders.
  • Acts as a consultant to colleagues and peers in their area of specialty to optimize patient care.
  • Informs and educates staff of current developments in their specialty area.
  • Communicates with and obtains information from the patient, family members, and significant others and uses this information to ensure patient-focused care and patient involvement in decision-making, following HIPPA guidelines.
  • Obtains comprehensive data on individual patient's personal, medical/health histories including anthropometric, lab results, medications, demographics, and activity/exercise.
  • Obtains nutrition history.
  • Determines nutrient and energy requirements.
  • Participates in research activities which advances the body of knowledge in their specialty areas.
  • Identifies and reviews possible food/medication/herb interactions.
  • Works closely with food service personnel to promote delivery of care.
  • Analyzes and interprets nutrition and health assessment data, identifies nutrition-related problems and sets priorities for nutrition intervention.
  • Formulates nutrition care plans. Establishes follow-up plans and continues providing nutrition care to obtain appropriate clinical outcomes.
  • Educate patient, family members, and significant others about diet modifications for home and individualizes plan to meet specific needs, food preferences, and usual eating pattern.
  • Communicates with health professionals in the community as needed.
  • Documents initial and follow-up nutrition health assessments in the medical record according to department standards-EPIC and/or CBORD.
  • Integrates nutrition recommendations with other aspects of patient care by participating in interdisciplinary discussions focused on patients.
  • Educates other health care professionals about the positive impact of appropriate nutritional care.
  • Demonstrates competencies required by specific area of work.
  • Promotes nutrition care services to other health care providers and practices through individual communication.
  • Participates in Department and Hospital activities.
  • Precepts and instructs dietetic interns during their rotations and participates in their performance evaluation.
  • Actively engages in process improvement to advance the delivery of nutrition care with limited resources.
  • Develops professional portfolio consistent with area of practice and seeks continuing education activities to maintain competence.
  • Accountable for meeting budgeted visit volume and revenue projections in assigned area through marketing of nutrition services and community outreach; meets established productivity goals.
  • Demonstrates ability to change patient's nutrition behavior for positive health outcomes.
  • Ability to effectively communicate to patient CMS guidelines as related to medical nutrition therapy coverage.
  • Organizes the work for the day and prioritizes/ reorganizes throughout the day as needed. May be required to work in different MGB locations.
  • Appropriately orders tube feedings, infant formulas, and supplements.
  • May order Total Parenteral Nutrition.
  • May clarify orders in the Provider Order Entry system.


Qualifications

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS (if applicable):

Registered Dietitian - Commission on Dietetic Registration - required.

Licensed Dietitian - Commonwealth of MA - required.

Advanced Certification- preferred

EDUCATION:

MS in Nutrition, Dietetics, or related subject preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 5 years
  • 2 proven areas of expertise- management, clinical specialty, patient care population.
  • Increasing responsible positions demonstrating leadership and management ability.
  • Breadth of experience and knowledge to be able to mentor RDs in many specialties.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

• Supervises clinical dietitians, clinical nutrition specialists, senior clinical nutritionists.

• Responsible for clinical staff and clerical staff

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Meets budgeted volume, productivity, and benchmarking criteria.
  • Demonstrates efficient use of expendable resources.
  • Manages budget to meet predefined goals.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Outpatient office setting
  • May be required to work in different locations.
