Our Commercial Lines department is currently seeking candidates for an associate underwriter class beginning January 2025. Associate Underwriters support underwriting teams in all aspects of renewal and post-issue transactions. This position is based at our Headquarters in Fairfield, Ohio.

Many departments at our Headquarters in Fairfield, Ohio, offer hybrid work options, empowering associates to work from home several days a week. Depending on your role and responsibilities, hybrid options may be available for those working at headquarters.

Starting pay: The pay rate for this position is $21.63 an hour ($45,000 annually). Eligible associates may also receive an annual cash bonus and stock incentives based on company and individual performance.

Be ready to:
  • administrate an assigned renewal book of business by underwriting and processing renewals subject to determined line of authority and applying knowledge of coverage forms, rating plans and guidelines in selection and pricing of individual risks and change requests
  • ensure adequate pricing through proper classification, predictive modeling, accuracy of information and adherence to company underwriting standards and philosophy, referring any accounts outside authority level to an underwriter
  • assist the portfolio team with distribution of work tasks
  • complete agency endorsement requests by applying underwriting judgement, clarification and guidance to the team assistant for issuance, or refer to the agency underwriter
  • communicate directly with agencies to gather information
  • communicate with Loss Control, Premium Audit, Direct Bill, Claims and Sales to provide service to agents and underwriters, applying discretion to escalate when applicable
  • research and gather information about coverage questions, state issues and workflows and refer to an underwriter or team leader when necessary
  • meets department service level agreements for renewal and endorsement issuance, respond to inquiries in a timely manner, effectively research and work to solve problems for internal and external customers
  • handle special projects and assignments as directed


Be equipped with:
  • the ability to learn and develop knowledge and skills to evaluate risks that include property, general liability, auto and umbrella
  • knowledge of the Commercial Lines Manual, and all pertinent systems
  • the ability to develop positive working relationships with team members and agents by working to find possible solutions that are beneficial to all
  • skilled use of verbal communication to explain, negotiate and present information and an understanding of when to use verbal or written communication

  • accredited institute classes and exams
  • classroom and online learning

  • engages in self-development activities, reading materials, industry or other relevant books or trade journals to stay current on emerging trends
  • aware of departmental service goals and strives to achieve and or exceed established targets
Bring education and experience from:
  • an associate's or bachelor's degree is preferred
  • or two or more years of insurance related work experience; Associate in General Insurance (AINS) designation preferred
