The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) serves some of Orange County's most vulnerable student populations and provides support and mandated fiscal oversight to 28 school districts serving more than 600 schools and approximately 475,000 students. In addition to providing direct instruction to students through its own alternative and special education programs, OCDE administers an array of programs and services that are critical to the operations of local school districts and community colleges, facilitating professional development, legal guidance, payroll, career and technical education support, high-speed internet access, Local Control and Accountability Plan assistance and approval, resources for families, and student enrichment. Job Summary
OCDE's Communications and Media Services team highlights, promotes and supports the work of the Orange County Department of Education and Orange County schools with video production, copywriting, media relations, graphic design, web design and event planning and support. The staff also produces content for an education news blog called the OCDE Newsroom. We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic individual to join us as a Communications Support Specialist (Publications) in the Communications and Media Services Unit. The successful candidate will be responsible for utilizing specialized graphic design and other software to develop and create layouts and treatments for OCDE newsletters and other materials. This includes soliciting, editing, and writing newsletter articles, selecting content from various OCDE departments and external sources, attending OCDE events, taking photographs, and writing related articles. Additionally, the candidate will edit, format, and process photographs for inclusion in publications, lay out and format newsletters, preproduction copy, and submit print requests for production. Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: • Graduation from high school or high school equivalency test. • Four (4) years of four years of progressively responsible office administrative experience including the development and design of print and visual materials using computers and advanced software packages; or an equivalent combination of training and experience Coursework in journalism, graphic/commercial arts, or business writing are highly desirable.
