About the Position:
The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Communications Technician Supervisor in our Communications Division at State Police Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia or in Salem Virginia. The successful candidate will plan, schedule, and supervise the installation, maintenance and inspection of towers, antennas, emergency power plants, remote radio repeater site buildings, and related equipment for the Department of State Police or other public safety agencies as directed; oversee the inspection, repair, and maintenance work performed by tower crew and outside contractors; supervise the repair of communications equipment/structures for State Police and that of other agencies on an emergency basis to maintain or restore service to communications systems; maintain inventory records and records on status of work in progress and completed; and develop and administer cross training plans and/or develop desk procedures for subordinate staff to ensure continuity of operations.

Minimum Qualifications

•Considerable demonstrated knowledge of antenna system technology; of tower equipment and rigging; of electricity; power plant technology; and the operation of electronic test equipment and software.
•Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices; and of safety practices and regulations/requirements.
•Skill in operating computers and using Microsoft Office applications.
•Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints and specifications for communications towers and related equipment; to install and repair radio towers, antennas and equipment and supervise the work of others; to form relationships with co-workers, general public, and other agency personnel; to transport and handle bulky equipment in the field; to climb to heights up to 400 feet; to maintain detailed schedules, service and inventory records, and prepare reports for management; to lift 50 pounds without assistance as per United States Department of Labor/Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and up to 51 to 75 pounds with assistance; to respond on a 24-hour basis when necessary to establish, restore or prevent service outages; and to travel overnight throughout the state when required.
•Continued employment contingent upon successful completion and maintenance of North American Technician Excellence (NATE) approved competent climber, advanced climber, and tower rescue certification, weigh less than 280 pounds, and have a waist girth no greater than 60 inches.
•Possession of a valid Virginia Driver's License.
•Must live within 90 aeronautical miles of assigned duty post in either North Chesterfield or Salem Virginia.
•High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Additional Considerations

•Experience in tower construction, antenna installation, emergency power plant and switching gear inspection and maintenance of related equipment at a supervisory level in a public safety environment preferred.
