TxDOT's Waco District is searching for a Construction Inspector I, II or III- to join it's Belton Area Office.

Inspectors cover multiple construction projects, large and small, and support the ongoing growth in Central Texas. They also perform detailed inspection and management of highway construction projects of widely varying size and scope, from major interstate reconstruction, highway rehabilitations, bridge replacements, pedestrian upgrades, and much more. Construction Inspector I: B18 $45,521 - $71,055 / yearly

Construction Inspector II: B19 $48,244 - $76,028 / yearly

Construction Inspector III: B20 $51,158 - $81,351 / yearly

Position Description

Construction Inspector I and II: Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and/or complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing airport improvement projects. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Construction Inspector III: Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and/or complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing airport improvement projects. Trains others. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform material tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

Construction Inspector I:

- Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections.

- Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management.

- Calculates payments due to contractors for work completed.

- Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges, and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.

- Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans or airport closure plans and ensures compliance with approved safety standards; inspects barricades as required moves traffic control devices and barricades.

- Supports district maintenance personnel in charge of district routine maintenance inspections.

- Assists in engineering-related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plan development by others.

- Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.

- Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.

- Performs other job-related responsibilities as assigned.

Construction Inspector II - In addition to the above duties:

- Handles problem calls from producers, suppliers, inspectors, and construction project field personnel.

- Prepares and reviews correspondence.

- Coordinates inspection schedules, traffic control needs, and access issues directly with district personnel.

- Serves as a lead worker or project leader.

Construction Inspector III - In addition to all above duties:

- Reviews construction records, inspection reports and records audits to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications

- Mentors and develops technical employees in test and inspection procedures and material specifications.

- Ensures prompt notification and/or repair of any deterioration or damage that could be hazardous to the traveling public or more costly to repair if neglected.

- Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

  • Construction Inspector I: No experience required. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Construction Inspector II: 1 year in construction, maintenance and repairs, construction inspection, engineering support, materials, or process inspection; or related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis .   • Construction Inspector III: 2 years in construction, maintenance and repairs, construction inspection, engineering support, materials or process inspection; or related experience. Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Construction Inspector I:

- Communicate effectively

Construction Inspector III- in addition to all the above competencies:

- Overseeing and coordinating projects and program activities

- Training in a classroom, office, or field environment

- Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions

- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

- Subject to noise

- Subject to vibration

Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals

Subject to air and skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids

Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device

- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.

- Standing-prolonged periods of time

- Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another

- Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
