JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for maintaining costumes, heads, hands, feet and accessories for existing characters, shows and new projects; and recreating existing costumes and pieces by repairing and/or replacing them. Responsible for painting and retouching existing character costumes pieces using accurate color matching. Should have familiarity with and ability to use a vacuum form machine.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain costumes by repairing, rehabbing, recreating, painting, and/or distressing character heads, hands, feet, costumes, and accessories. Painting processes to include properly assessing, mixing, and applying airbrush and/or faux paint techniques, automotive paint applications, as well as wet/dry brush and sponge painting. Painting techniques to include brushing, rolling, blending, spraying, and faux finishing techniques of entertainment costumes. Execute color mixing of paints for accurate color matching to achieve approved character looks. Some large complex costumes will require bungees to be changed and maintained daily.
  • Troubleshoot character/costume problems, on site analysis. Determine, with input as needed, whether problem can be resolved on location or needs to be transferred to Costume Fabrication or Creative Fabrication.
  • Assist with the fittings of new and existing performers and make costume adjustments per supervisory authorization.
  • Assist with setting up and implementing procedures for new shows, events, and characters to facilitate the daily maintenance.
  • Track and report material, repair, and/or painting/distressing successes or failures to supervisor weekly.
  • Assists in cleanliness and organization of the work areas by assuring that all containers are labeled and stored according to MSDS and NFPA standards and performs accurate logging of daily work product.
  • Understands and actively participates in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy, procedures, training and team member involvement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:
  • High school degree or GED is required.
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in Visual Arts, Scenery Production, Technical Theater, Costuming or equivalent is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:
  • 1+ years costume fabrication and maintenance with the finishing aspect of costumes/animated figures/characters is required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
