Job Duties

Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of 2027.

CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person's individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.

The Crisis Prevention and Response Team Officer is responsible for assisting in development and maintenance of a therapeutic environment for patients experiencing emotional disturbance. CPRT officers actively engage with patients, collaborate with multidisciplinary staff, and provide specialized emergency response to behavioral health crises. The CPRT's mission is to prevent and de-escalate crises, reducing the need for restraints and improving patient outcomes through rapid intervention. CPRT responds to behavioral health emergencies and employs Therapeutic Options physical interventions as needed. HIPAA Level Three Access-Limited or access for a limited time period . Utilization of information will be in accordance with HIPAA regulations regarding use limitation, disclosure and requests or PHI.

Minimum Qualifications

- Experience in patient care, customer service, or related fields, preferably in a psychiatric setting (REQUIRED)
- Must possess a valid Virginia Driver's License (REQUIRED)
- Must be able to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays, and handle overtime as needed (REQUIRED)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Successfully Perform the Work:

- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively.
- Basic computer skills for communication, clinical, and administrative tasks.
- Capable of safely de-escalating situations, and engaging in physical restraint techniques as trained and necessary during emergencies.
- Ability to remain calm and act quickly during emergencies.
- Ability to maintain constant vigilance through patrols and interact with patients to provide early intervention and support.
- Manual dexterity, standing, walking, and lifting are a routine part of work.

Additional Considerations

- Prior experience in law enforcement, military, corrections, or behavioral health (PREFERRED)
