This position is a statewide recruitment, the incumbent will be headquartered at any Investigations office, including but not limited to the following counties: Sacramento, Stanislaus, Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, and Riverside.

Under the direction of a Staff Services Manager (SSM) I, Data Analysts are charged with collecting, curating, and interpreting quantitative empirical data for use in identifying potentially fraudulent activity. The substantive findings and data resources developed and maintained by Data Analysts are then used as potential leads by other Investigations staff conducting investigations and enforcement actions targeting potential criminal activity by entities both internal and external to DMV.

In the course of their duties, Data Analysts are primarily responsible for gathering and interpreting empirical data related to driver licensing, vehicle registration, and occupational licensing. This includes querying, validating, and organizing both structured and unstructured data; performing various statistical analyses; providing input to management on the operational as well as potentially criminal implications of missing and/or defective data; creating and maintaining data visualization tools; and conducting evaluations of enforcement activities to assess the impact on fraudulent and criminal activity. A critical component of the job duties of this position involves data documentation, including creation and maintenance of data dictionaries and data models, and the development (in consultation with management) of data vocabulary and data definitions. This position will also involve providing input on the creation of, access to, and monitoring the ongoing use of, data collection regimes and databases (both internal and external to DMV). As many of the core duties of this position involve the use of data management, statistical, and data visualization software, incumbents to the position will routinely be expected to develop test scripts and programs, validation procedures, matching procedures, and provide input to information systems programmers and developers on the performance of data extraction and data modeling routines.

Desirable qualifications: knowledge of DMV procedures and programs especially with regards to driver licensing and vehicle registration; and able to communicate effectively to a broad range of audiences including members of the public and departmental executive leadership.
