Key Responsibilities:

Within the Tech Ops Strategy & Performance team, the Director Global Maintenance Strategy leads the integrated strategic planning effort of the maintenance network to continuously align and evolve with the airline's complex route network and fleet deployment. The Director will be responsible for leading a strategy-oriented team that leverages knowledge of TechOps business dynamics in conjunction with rigorous data analytics to create actionable insights. This high-performing team integrates data analytics and business knowledge and creates strategies that are compelling and tell the story of the direction that the maintenance footprint and activities need to go. The team, under the leadership of the Director, ensures that the maintenance and footprint strategy is consistently and dependably built to maximize aircraft availability to the airline.

  • Create and drive United's maintenance strategy focused on planning the right capacity and access in the right locations.
  • By leveraging data driven insights, develops and continuously hones integrated footprint plan recommendations of where United performs which type of aircraft maintenance (e.g. line vs base; within line maintenance (hubs vs spokes); within the hub portfolio; integrated hangar plan, etc.) to maximize the value of the maintenance network's resources.
  • Collaborates closely with Cross-Functional Tech Ops (Line Maintenance, Base Maintenance, Reliability and Engineering, Supply Chain, etc.) and Airline Teams (Network Planning, Air Ops Planning, Network Operations Center, etc.) in establishing strategic direction of the maintenance footprint.

  • Owns Tech Ops' input to the airline's Schedule Development process, ensuring 1) the maintenance program's minimum maintenance requirements, 2) additional access needed to drive reliability, and 3) Tech Ops schedule quality indicators are understood and evolve as the fleet's deployment profile evolves, and are sustained in all future network schedules.
  • Design and institute new paradigms for strategic schedule reviews across TechOps that actively raise divisional awareness of upcoming schedule change information, aircraft access opportunities and risk, and lead strategic discussions on workload scheduling and how it impacts the maintenance network.
  • Build trusting relationships cross-functionally with functions with whom partnering is a success factor. Set the constructive, collaborative tone for the team in discussions where functional interests may not align on the surface.
  • Provide strong leadership and career development to direct and indirect team members, helping to coach, develop and remove barriers to career success.

Qualifications

What's needed to succeed (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of either: A) airline experience, majority of which is in technical operations, network or operational planning, and/or integrated airline planning, B) Finance or Resource/Enterprise Planning at another industrial corporation or C) Professional advisory serving airline clients with engagements across strategy, corporate development, operational efficiency.
  • 'General Manager' executive mindset that thinks strategically, connects dots, with the foresight to anticipate the impact of "known unknowns."
  • Natural inclination to challenge the status quo.
  • Intellectual curiosity and self-motivation to heed signals in data and want to understand root causes and devise direction for the team that allows them to appreciate the opportunity and produce work that can glean actionable insights.
  • Proven track record of structuring and guiding the development of executive level presentations.
  • Comfortability doing the right thing and taking a tough stance especially when it might be unpopular.
  • Strong leadership skills, underpinned by empathy, that can rally a team across a common purpose, while cultivating an environment that allows for team member to thrive as their authentic selves.
  • Experience engaging with senior leaders, leveraging emotional intelligence skills to employ and balance strong executive presence with humility.
  • Demonstrated track-record of successfully influencing decisions in a cross-functional setting.
  • Self-starter, ability to handle concurrent projects and prioritize multiple competing demands, managing the matching of resources with workload, and manage up status updates without follow-up.


What will help you propel from the pack (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Master's degree (Business Administration, Supply Chain, Industrial Engineering, Economics)
  • Experience with: Network Planning, Airline Schedule Design, Tech Ops Planning, Aircraft Routing at a major global airline with multiple aircraft types and hubs.
