Summary:


    The Director of Data Engineering is responsible for the creation, maintenance, and governance of data models and ensures the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of enterprise data. The Director must exhibit strategic thinking, strong leadership skills, and deep expertise in data engineering to drive the organization's data initiatives forward. The Director oversees three teams totaling ~20 data engineers and data analysts, and reports to the Associate Vice President for Data Management.

    Responsibilities:

    • Strategy Development and Execution: Develop and implement data engineering strategies and solutions aligned with organizational goals, with a focus on creating prepared and curated data models that will serve as reusable, governed sources of truth. Identify opportunities for improving data infrastructure, processes, and systems. Execute strategies to optimize data quality, accessibility, and usability.
    • Project Leadership: Lead data engineering projects from conception to completion, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to prioritize and execute data initiatives. Provide guidance and support to overcome technical challenges and obstacles.
    • Team Management: Lead, develop, and manage a team of ~20 data engineers and data analysts. Set high performance expectations and help team to achieve them. Create a positive team culture that promotes excellence and collaboration. Help individuals connect their work to Penn Medicine's mission.
    • Stakeholder Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders across the organization to understand data requirements and priorities. Communicate effectively with key stakeholders to align data engineering efforts with business objectives. Lead projects requiring coordination with cross-functional teams, ensuring seamless execution.
    • Collaboration: Collaborate with IS, data governance, and other relevant groups to ensure the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of enterprise data. Foster a culture of collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the data engineering teams.
    • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to optimize data engineering processes and workflows. Implement best practices and standards to ensure the accuracy and reliability of enterprise data. Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies in data engineering, incorporating relevant advancements into organizational practices.
    • Creating and Enforcing Standards: Leads the development of standards for Data Engineering, Data Quality, DataOps, and related activities. Evangelizes those standards, coaches others on their use, and monitors and addresses compliance with standards, addressing deviations that arise, to ensure consistency and quality.
    • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
    • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

    Education/Experience:

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field. (Required)
    • 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in a directly related area, during which both professional and management capability have been clearly demonstrated. Experience managing large complex data engineering projects is required. Extensive experience working with data from Electronic Health Records (EHRs). Experience managing to HIPAA and other regulatory, privacy, and data security requirements. (Required)
    • Master's degree. (Preferred)
    • 1+ years of experience with Epic EHR. (Preferred)

    Skills/Abilities:

    • Expertise: Expert in data engineering, data modeling, data transformation in the cloud using ELT approaches, data warehousing, and data governance. Expertise with ELT approaches that utilize tools including SQL, Python, Databricks/Spark, Azure Data Factory including expert knowledge of these approaches on cloud platforms. Applies knowledge to identify opportunities and develop solutions.
    • Analytical skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on driving data-driven decision-making.
    • Team Management: Demonstrated performance developing high-performing teams, fostering a positive culture of continuous improvement.
    • Strategic Leadership: Ability to establish and articulate a vision; develop and execute strategies; and track and measure results. Strong negotiating and consensus building abilities.
    • Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrated interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to work with a diversity of stakeholders, including senior leaders.
    • Healthcare knowledge: Knowledge of healthcare data, regulations, compliance requirements, and data privacy standards.
