Five (5) years of full-time professional experience working in higher education, risk management, event planning and/or public safety. Three (3) years of event/production management experience. Experience supervising professional staff. Experience developing and leading strategic initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, or a related field of study. Additional years (5+) of full-time professional experience working in higher education, risk management, event planning and/or public safety. Experience training and developing student leaders. Experience working in a large public or large private college/university setting. Experience managing data and implementing technology improvements/solutions.

Brief Description of Duties:Reporting to the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students, this position leads the Office of Student Life's risk management and mitigation efforts. In this role, the Director oversees safety needs, reduces risk, and ensures the continuity of business operations in the event of an emergency. The identified candidate also works with our 375 student clubs and organizations to communicate and manage policies and procedures surrounding event risk management, continuity of operations, and campus gatherings and demonstrations.

The incumbent is responsible for essential functions, including risk evaluations, compliance management, education and outreach to the community. This role is part of a collaborative team providing excellent service and support to our students, faculty, and staff. To thrive in this position, the Director must demonstrate flexibility, responsiveness, problem-solving skills, and concern for the well-being of the campus community. The incumbent must be able to work independently or in a group setting, have strong written and verbal communication skills, maintain up-to-date knowledge of compliance policies and best practices, and have experience collaborating and presenting in person with peers and others across university departments. The incumbent should possess experience cultivating collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, parents, family, and community members.

  • Event and Activity Risk Management:
    • Identifies potential risks by analyzing data, observing processes, and communicating with colleagues and student leaders.
    • Drafts and delivers reports and presentations outlining findings, identifying and explaining potential risks, and recommending solutions.
    • Develops and implements appropriate risk assessment models and develops, reviews, and recommends policies and procedures related to event management.
    • Coordinates logistics and plans and manages event timeline, ensuring all elements are executed as planned.
    • Clearly and effectively communicates with a detail-oriented and solution-driven approach.
    • In collaboration with campus partners, leads Student Affairs' risk management training and response for all club and organization events, including all student gatherings, activities, and demonstrations.
    • Works with colleagues in Student Affairs, Enterprise Risk Management, Campus Counsel, and Student Conduct and Community Standards.
    • Plays an integral role in responding to campus climate concerns and ensuring a safe campus environment.
    • Is aware of national and local issues impacting communities and maintains knowledge of current best practices related to risk management.
  • Operational Risk Management:
    • Undertakes continuous review of processes and procedures to ensure ongoing improvement and alignment with divisional and institutional objectives.
    • Leads the Office of Student Life's Continuity of Operations Plan, develops the plan's scope, manages resources, and trains staff on executing the plan.
    • Acts as the primary resource for facilities and operational emergency risk management, mitigation, and preparedness.
    • Provides practical and technical expertise to guide and coordinate departmental efforts in an emergency.
    • Consult regularly with the University's Campus Operations and Maintenance, University Police, Fire Marshall, Campus Life Centers, and other campus stakeholders.
    • In collaboration with the Director of Campus Life Centers, works with campus partners and stakeholders to ensure proper readiness of all Campus Life Center facilities during emergencies, incidents, and other situations.
  • Staff Development, Supervision, and Programming:
    • Supervises an Assistant Director as well as undergraduate and graduate student assistants.
    • Collaborates with divisional and institutional partners to create and assess an educational programming plan to target key areas of concern, interpersonal conflict, and safety education.
    • Educates students about their rights and responsibilities through active and passive programming.
    • Educates student club leaders on policies and procedures for event and activity risk management, serves as a resource agent for student clubs, and provides culturally responsive support to student groups.
    • Trains and educates staff in the Office of Student Life on all relevant topics, strategies, and techniques, including organizing routine workshops and drill exercises in partnership with campus experts.
  • Reporting, Data, and Assessment:
    • Interprets complex data to identify patterns, trends, and potential areas of concern.
    • Provides recommendations for risk mitigation strategies.
    • Conducts regular audits and assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of risk management controls and processes.
    • Prepares and coordinates reports (i.e., after action, inspection) and other documents following emergency situations.
    • Prepares quarterly updates on emergency preparedness and risk management progress for distribution to department leadership.
    • Routinely reviews and keeps up to date with all policies and procedures related to event and activities risk management and makes recommendations for improvement to the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students.
  • Budget Management:
    • Manages an assigned budget, ensuring efficient and effective use of existing resources, including budget planning, analysis, compliance, and management.
    • Ensures all accounting and purchasing practices and procedures are followed.
  • Professional Development and Committee Involvement:
    • Participates in opportunities that promote their learning, growth, and development (i.e., classes, training, committees, webinars).
    • Contributes to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs sponsored by areas within and outside the Office of Student Life (i.e., campus-wide traditions, events, programs).
    • Other duties or projects assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
    • Evening and weekend hours will be required at times.

Special Notes:This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,087 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
