SUMMARY: Responsible for design, development and implementation of the company's shipping environmental strategy.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Serves as the subject matter expert on environmental issues including but not limited to vessel or facility discharges, emissions, and permitting on environmental due diligence. Guide and support operating unit personnel with environmental compliance. Maintains ongoing communications with customers, state and federal representatives to ensure a positive and professional working relationship. Monitor changes to environmental rules and regulations providing summaries of impacts and recommendations to meet requirements. Assists in investigating environmental related incidents. Responds to inquiries or complaints from vessels, inspectors or government officials regarding environmental practices and operations. Tracks waste profiles, performs annual reporting and process payments for regulated waste disposal. Publishes occurrence announcements and ensures standardization on continual improvement initiatives and corrective actions. Evaluates new methods to minimize the ship's environmental impact. Assists internal and external auditors during environmental audits. Ensures environmental records are current, available and able to meet all correspondence deadlines or regulatory review.

Qualifications

EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree in environmental science/engineering, occupational safety and health, maritime academy, or a related field preferred.

EXPERIENCE: 10 or more years of experience in environmental compliance or operations.

TECHNICAL PROFICIENCY: Proficient with the use of Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint. Ability to learn and become familiar with technical hardware and systems.

COMPETENCIES: Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal/external business partners. Ability to function effectively with, or as part of, a team. Ability to effectively manage projects that may vary in nature and scope. Ability to work with minimal supervision and make independent decisions to implement company environmental programs. Ability to adapt to changing work demands. Ability to analyze customer, local, state and federal environmental requirements and initiatives and make recommendations to business unit and corporate leadership on necessary actions. Ability to influence outcomes and behaviors of individuals outside of direct reporting relationships. Ability to apply skill sets and demonstrate proven experience developing, improving and streamlining processes to meet established goals and objectives. Ability to develop and present presentations. Knowledge and comprehension of any and all federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations regarding environmental maritime regulatory compliance.

OTHER: Ability to travel is required.

JOB SCOPE: Position impacts multiple business units/segments.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works both inside an office environment and also outside in conditions of both high and low temperatures. May be exposed to odors, dust, dirt, mechanical hazards, high noise levels and potentially dangerous equipment. Must be able to crouch and stoop to get into areas with restricted headroom and be able to climb ladders. May require extended use of computer keyboard and viewing of computer monitor and ability to sit for long periods of time.
