Job Duties
Come join our team at the Department of Workforce Development and Advancement (DWDA)! In 2023, bipartisan legislation consolidated a dozen workforce development programs and data systems from various existing Commonwealth of Virginia agencies to create the Department of Workforce Development and Advancement (DWDA), known as Virginia Works. On July 1, 2024, Virginia Works stood up as an independent agency dedicated to creating, sustaining, and retaining a highly skilled workforce, and committed to making sure Virginia Works for everyone.
Assist unemployed and employed disabled veterans, special disabled veterans and other eligible persons (e.g., spouses) who seek VEC services to overcome significant barriers to employment (SBE) as defined in the most current Veteran Program Letter (VPL) issued by the Department of Labor (DOL) and obtain suitable employment. Provide intensive services to veterans identified with SBEs; address employment needs and facilitate placement into a suitable position; make personal visits to meet with clients and employers; conduct interviews and offer an array of services; and network and develop relationships with community providers to locate and assist veterans who would otherwise not be able to access a One-Stop facility (e.g., those in homeless shelters, state hospitals, Veterans' Centers, half-way houses, and/or other community-based facilities).
Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of career counseling, interviewing, and job placement principles and techniques, community resources, counseling services, social programs and veteran issues and services.
Strong customer service, case management, and computer skills (Microsoft Office or comparable software programs).
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing (e.g., conducting interviews and training, exchanging information with clients and partner staff, and preparing reports and training materials); assessing and matching client skills to open positions; working with clients in crisis to discover needs and enhance employable skills; motivate clients to achieve established goals and objectives; work independently; remain objective, non-judgmental and focused; meet deadlines; prepare and manage file documentation; and apply agency program standards and procedures.
Hiring preference is given as follows: first, a qualified, service-connected, Disabled Veteran; second, a qualified veteran; and third, a qualified Other Eligible Person as defined in Federal regulation found at Title 38 of the United States Code, Chapter 42.
