Responsibilities

The Discovery Services Specialist is part of the Integrated Library Systems workgroup which is part of the Integrated Library Services unit in FLVC Library Services. The unit is responsible for supporting, maintaining, developing, configuring, and troubleshooting the Integrated Library System (ILS), including the Statewide Borrowing Service, UBorrow, and outfacing Discovery Service for Florida's public college and university libraries using an array of automated tools that make it easier to manage library materials and streamline delivery of library services.

This position helps the libraries of the public university and college systems of Florida manage and maintain the Integrated Library System. Using expertise and system knowledge, the incumbent analyzes user needs and identifies, develops and implements solutions.

Assists with maintenance of the Integrated Library System by performing system configurations to support the need of the libraries throughout the state.

Work with library Technical Services staff to configure the system for optimal performance and use by configuring various function-specific system tables. Primary areas of responsibility are Primo VE, E-resources in Alma, and the Alma/Primo Link resolver. Provides backup support for Cataloging and Discovery Tools.

Participate in the ongoing planning and delivery of access to library resources and services for faculty, students, staff and researchers. Assist in the training, planning and coordination of projects related to ILS, Discovery Tool, and related products.

Develops, plans, schedules, and conducts instructional and informational programs that enable libraries to use FLVC services and products effectively within established guidelines. Designs and develops instructional and informational materials for use in delivering the programs. Some travel is required. Communicates systems status updates, shares information with, and makes presentations to various state library and regional groups. Visits libraries as appropriate to fulfill assigned responsibilities.

Serve as liaison for the FLVC DoIT programmers, library staff, and campus IT where they intersect in relation to FLVC Library Services. Understand the functional, operational, and service needs of the library in order to develop gateways between the library's online resources and locally developed or third-party applications. Maintain current awareness of research and developments in areas of responsibility, including standards, library trends, statistics, and instructional design.

Perform work in support of business processes and projects, as assigned. Performs time sensitive tasks and meets established deadlines; maintains effective communications with appropriate FLVC staff; maintains effective working relationships to ensure the success of the business processes and projects. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, or other appropriate degree and four years' experience or a high school diploma or equivalent and eight years of experience. (Note: or a combination of appropriate post high school education and experience equal to eight years.)

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree from a library program accredited by the American Library Association

Experience configuring ExLibris' Alma/Primo VE Integrated Library System

Successful completion of Primo VE and/or Alma Certified Administrator Exams

Experience working with Microsoft Office applications, including proficiency with Excel.

Previous experience working with and troubleshooting electronic resources at an academic library

What is a typical day in this position?

A typical day in the role of Discovery Services Specialist with FLVC Library Services consists of supporting library staff at FLVC's 40 member institutions by investigating E-Resource display and access issues in Primo VE and assisting institutions in setting up Primo VE features and customizations.

Troubleshooting eResources and Primo displays can include searching online documentation, consulting with colleagues in other FLVC areas (often through TEAMS chat or email), consulting with Ex Libris (typically through their Salesforce ticket system), and sometimes consulting with other library vendors.

While not a daily activity, this position also:

Attends and contributes to internal meetings

Updates and creates documentation

Attends and liaises with two MCLS committees, the E-Resources Management Standing Committee (ERMSC) and the User Interfaces Standing Committee (UISC)

Keeps up with Ex Libris' quarterly new releases for Primo VE and relevant Alma eResources updates.

Attends conferences to expand and share skills

What can I expect in the first 60-90 days?

Within the first weeks of employment, the successful candidate can expect onboarding and orientation to familiarize them with FLVC Library Services and FSU internal policies, procedures, and systems. Within the first 60 to 90 days, the candidate will build on their experience working with electronic resources by working closely with the incumbent Discovery Specialist on current and incoming cases to gain expertise on troubleshooting reported issues with eResources and our discovery system, Primo VE.

Anticipated Salary Range

Anticipated starting salary in the upper $50,000's to lower $60,000's, commensurate with education and experience.
