The School of Data Science at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for an Editorial Content Manager to join the Communications Team to support the School's strategic goals by creating and managing content that highlights the School's thought leadership, research, programs, and community. This role involves identifying and developing stories that showcase faculty expertise and research, working with University media relations on content distribution, and communicating complex data science concepts in an engaging way. The manager will also oversee internal and external communications, align with AP and UVA style, and provide strategic guidance for the School's website. This position requires strong storytelling, writing, editing, and project management skills.

Responsibilities:
Content and Media Relations
- Lead in identifying, writing and placing features on data science research and initiatives.
- Manage editorial calendar, content creation, and support content marketing
- Lead in writing features on general school news, announcements, events, and people.
- Manage media relations in coordination with the University's media relations team.
- Create content that makes data science and concepts understandable and exciting for lay audiences.
- Source and manage freelance writers as needed.
- Create, direct, and monitor editorial guidelines and best practices for the School
- Provide editorial support for written and multimedia content, including but not limited to articles, blogs, newsletters, video and podcast scripts
- Collaborate with the Communications Team to ensure visual and written brand is clearly communicated, consistent and safeguarded.
- Ensures written content reflects School's brand identity and is represented accurately to external stakeholders.
- Provide strategic website support by anticipating trends in technology and design to inform website evolution
- Work closely with the Senior Web Developer on improving navigation, accessibility and overall site health (Drupal platform)
- Utilize Google analytics and other web analytics platforms to track and measure traffic, user behavior, acquisition, source, and duration
- Serve as project manager and leads editorial efforts for any special print or digital projects for the School and Dean.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree and at least five (5) years of experience in a communications, public relations or related field.
- Demonstrated experience producing and editing multiple storytelling formats, including basic news, features, press releases, long-form and project reports, magazine and/or newsletter writing
- Excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills
- Dedicated team player with a strong ability to build positive relationships
- Excellent copy editing and proofreading skills; AP Style Guide expertise preferred
- Background or experience in science writing and translating complex research preferred
