The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking multiple Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialists 3 (In-Training) positions to install, maintain, and repair electrical, electronic, and communication systems in transportation infrastructure. These specialists will support WSDOT's mission by ensuring the reliability and safety of fiber optic networks, Intelligent Transportation Systems, Driver Information Systems, tolling equipment, and reversible express lane operations. The role requires adherence to national, state, and local codes. Emphasis is placed on fostering a respectful and inclusive work environment that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.

What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist will:
  • Repair changeable message signs, communication outages, motor vehicle knockdowns, and vandalism.
  • Identify equipment and circuit problems using various testing equipment.
  • Diagnose electrical and electronic problems in control systems, ramp metering systems, weather stations, and other equipment.
  • Perform repairs according to NEC and WSDOT codes and regulations.
  • Conduct aerial repairs using a bucket truck vehicle.
  • Write daily work reports and troubleshoot fiber optic cables.
  • Schedule and perform preventative maintenance on traffic equipment.
  • Document all work performed daily.
  • Prepare traffic control plans and establish safe working zones.
  • Conduct safety inspections, attend safety meetings, and instruct junior crew members in safe practices.
Qualifications

This is an Electrical & Electronic Systems Specialist 3 position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level, depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal "in-training" plan.

At the EESS Trainee level, the following is required:
  • High School Graduation or GED
  • Basic algebra
At the EESS 1 level, the following is required:
  • Two (2) years (approximately 4,000 hours) of relevant experience performing technical electrical and electronic work.
OR
  • Completion of equivalent, relevant professional formal training through a minimum two (2) year electrical apprenticeship program, accredited electrical or electronics training program, vocational or technical school, military-based electrical/electronics training, or agency-specific in-training plan.
OR
  • Associate degree in electrical or electronics technology and one (1) year of relevant electrical/electronic experience.
At the EESS 2 level, the following is required:
  • Four (4) years (approximately 8,000 hours) of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical and electronic work; Possession of a valid Washington State journey or master-level electrical license (EL01, EL04, EL07, or ME01) may substitute for two (2) years of education or experience.
OR
  • Completion of equivalent, relevant professional formal training through a minimum four (4) year electrical apprenticeship program; accredited electrical or electronics training program; vocational or technical school; military-based electrical/electronics training; or agency-specific in-training plan.
OR
  • A bachelor's degree in electrical or electronics technology and one (1) year of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical and electronic work.
At the EESS 3 level, the following is required:
  • Five (5) years (approximately 10,000 hours) of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical, and/or electronic work; Possession of a valid Washington State journey or master-level electrical license (EL01, EL04, EL07, or ME01) may substitute for two (2) years of education or experience.
OR
  • Completion of equivalent, relevant professional formal training through a minimum of five (5) electrical apprenticeship program, accredited electrical or electronics training program, vocational or technical school, military-based electrical/electronics training, or agency-specific in-training plan.
OR
  • A bachelor's degree in electrical or electronics technology and two (2) years of relevant professional experience performing technical electrical, and/or electronic work.
In addition, for all EESS levels:
  • High school graduation or GED
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Class B CDL endorsement without air brake restriction (or ability to acquire within 6 months for an EESS 1 or 2).
  • Ability to differentiate colors to perform electrical and electronic maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to manipulate up to 50 lbs. of equipment and move about unrestrictedly while ascending stairs/ladders/inclines and uneven surfaces; ability to work at heights exceeding 100 feet in/around/over live traffic and 600 feet above the water on bridges.
  • Availability to work during evenings and weekends and handle emergency situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in English.
  • Ability to work on blueprints, plans, and sketches; ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Ability to input information on a computer, generating work reports.
  • Ability to perform basic algebraic equations.
  • Knowledge of how to operate basic testing equipment for electrical/electronic systems, including fiber optics.
It is preferredthat qualified candidates also have the following:
  • Journey Level Electrician (EL01, EL021 EL04, or EL07).
  • Electronics Certification by Washington State CET or International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET).
  • A+ certification for computers and electronics
  • Class A CDL endorsement
  • Washington State Flagging Card
  • Formal fiber splicing training.

  • Depending on qualifications, this position can be filled at the EESS Trainee - 3 levels:
  • EESS Trainee - annual salary range: $56,914 - $69,312.
  • EESS 1 - annual salary range: $72,865 - $88,741.
  • EESS 2 - annual salary range: $80,438 - $98,015.
  • EESS 3 - annual salary range: $84,483 - $102,942.
  • The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
