What You Will Do

Within this job, successful candidates will have to opportunity to support the Laboratory's mission by serving as the subject matter expert for nuclear facility electrical engineering matters, including all aspects of electrical safety, power quality, power monitoring, and critical power reliability/redundancy issues. Often in this role, engineers will perform engineering studies including short circuit, device coordination, equipment sizing, exterior lighting, fault current, and arc flash for both medium and low voltage equipment. Electrical Engineers in this position will work alongside senior engineers (e.g., fire protection, structural, mechanical, and electrical) and other senior engineers in team settings to complete collaborative full-system design solutions through mentoring, calculations, and leadership.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Awareness of nuclear facility engineering in one or more of the following, nuclear criticality safety analysis, safety basis, system engineer, project engineer, or design engineer.
  • Awareness of nuclear facility engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Knowledge of new and existing non-reactor facility electrical engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of computer-aided engineering tools to solve operations-based engineering problems.
  • Awareness of engineering work, planning, construction, control methods, and project/process engineering/management practices.
  • Awareness of industry, regulatory, or national codes and standards including IBC, NEC, IEEE, NFPA 70E, engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired. Current registration as a Engineer in Training (EIT) is highly desirable.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Awareness of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies. Extensive awareness of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards, and guides.
  • Awareness in Instrumentations and Controls-related designs.
  • Familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures.
  • Current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) and/or Professional Engineering certification.
  • Experience in power system design/management.
  • Knowledge or experience in the application of SKM Power Tools Software for Fault Current Analysis & Device Coordination.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
