Job Summary

Teachers Retirement Association (TRA) has been providing pension coverage to Minnesota educators for decades, with a mission to help members and their beneficiaries plan for an independent and financially secure retirement. We are currently seeking two job candidates with backgrounds in accounting, payroll, financial auditing, or compliance auditing for our Employer Compliance Specialist roles.

Our Employer Compliance Specialist positions exist to perform analytics of organizational and individual member payroll data, composite fiscal year payroll data, and lifetime member account data provided to TRA to best serve our members, employer (school district) reporting units, and the integrity of the retirement fund. Incumbents will additionally develop and recommend strategies/procedures that emphasize accuracy, compliance, and employer unit education/communication to best ensure salary eligibility, TRA membership, timely payroll processing, and proper outstanding payment monitoring. Lastly, the incumbents in the position will act as subject matter experts in system functions, compliance, and pension law/statute auditing - serving as experts for related projects, training, statute analysis, employer payroll submissions, and initiative implementations for our Data Integrity team.

These positions are located in our St. Paul, Minnesota office and may require occasional travel, up to 10%. These positions may be eligible for a work schedule that includes some teleworking.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years of professional level accounting, payroll, financial reporting, financial auditing, and/or compliance auditing experience.

OR

Two (2) years of professional level accounting, payroll, financial reporting, financial auditing, and/or compliance auditing experience, and a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Data Analytics, Business Administration, or a related field.

Experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, interpret, reconcile, and audit complex financial data.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and apply financial statutes, laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and successfully manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to diagnose problems and recommend solutions for process improvement and procedural development initiatives.
  • Strong interpersonal, written communication, and verbal communication skills necessary to collaborate on enterprise projects; train and present to a variety of stakeholders; present complex financial information to users in a comprehensive style; and influence others to resolve conflicting viewpoints.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Cisco WebEx, and/or equivalent software packages.

Successful candidates must further be able to secure own transportation for in-state business travel.

Preferred Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Data Analytics, Business Administration or a related field.

An Advanced degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Economics, Data Analytics, Business Administration, or a related field.

Experience working with State of Minnesota government financial systems, such as SWIFT and SEMA4.

Expert proficiency in using Access, PowerPoint, QuickBooks, and/or equivalent software packages.

Experience working for a public pension fund or private financial services institution.

Experience with financial reporting processes.

Physical Requirements

This position requires occasional transporting of articles such as file folders, ledgers and/or small tools. May be required to move or maintain a stationary position for long periods of time.
