JOB DESCRIPTION:
Position Title: Engineer 1-2, Test - Steering
Reports To: Manager, Engineering
Date Last Revised: January 15, 2024

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for executing hands-on engineering lab tests for: system, device, component validation/verification; new product development; product/production support, etc. The test engineer is involved with all parts of the testing lifecycle from requirements definition and planning to inspection and documentation.

Essential Functions:
  • Work with engineers and technicians to define the best test approach (DVP) and setup
  • Initiate and manage test requests within the Teamcenter PLM environment
  • Gather components and assemble into test units as needed
  • Use a variety of tools for assembly and setup from basic mechanics tools to specialty tools like: pneumatic and DC torque tools, hydraulic and arbor presses, etc.
  • Select best gage or measurement system based on performance limits (e.g. pressure, flow, torque, force, temperature, strain, etc.)
  • Setup and monitor data acquisition equipment (Lab View)
  • Follow established test procedures for various performance, durability, impact, and environmental test cases and sequences
  • Accurately record and document test results with supporting evidence in the form of data, graphs, pictures, video, etc.
  • Write technically detailed reports summarizing test results in both standard and DVP&R formats
  • Perform failure analysis on tested parts and field returns using problem solving tools and methodologies
  • Perform preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on hydraulic power units, mechanical linkages, environmental chambers, PLC control systems, etc.
  • Perform and track gage/equipment calibration
  • Work around heavy trucks for installation and test setup
  • Actively participate in lab & vehicle safety audits and protocols
  • Maintain an organized test facility and workspace by following 5s principles
  • Generate new test procedures, work instructions, training documents, etc.
  • Participate in design and DFMEA reviews
Knowledge:
  • Familiarity with truck steering and suspension systems
  • Understanding of hydraulic power and control systems
  • Knowledge of materials including steel, cast iron, and elastomeric seals
  • Knowledge of testing standards and guidelines from IATF, ISO, SAE, etc.
Experience:
  • Experience in an engineering field or relevant co-op/internship experience: 1 to 3 years (Engineer 1) or 4-10 years (Engineer 2)
  • Testing experience in heavy-duty truck, bus and/or automotive components is desired
  • Experience with Mechatronic devices and PLC controllers is a plus
Skills:
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Must be self-motivated, energetic, and organized
  • Has the ability to assimilate data quickly
  • Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Maintains a positive work ethic and is able to multi-task
  • Prioritizes time and resources effectively in a dynamic environment
  • Root cause analysis tools (experience with problem solving analysis)
  • Ability to plan and organize technical projects
  • Willing and able to acquire a commercial driver's license (CDL)
Education:
  • BS Degree in Engineering is required
  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering (e.g. BSME or BSMET) preferred
  • Other engineering disciplines will be considered for candidates with high mechanical aptitude
Travel:
