Position Information

The Dallas District is in search of highly motivated and exceptionally well-rounded professionals to join its outstanding force of civil engineers. The purpose of the Engineering Assistant (EA) Program is to provide optimal training and comprehensive, hands-on experience to recent young graduate engineers. With a sound understanding of all aspects of civil engineering, TxDOT's engineers are better equipped to handle the complex situations and numerous challenges the job presents.

The rotation schedule includes:

  • 24 months in Design
  • 18 months in Construction
  • 6 months in Operation
  • All EA's are assigned a mentor


The Dallas District's continued success is tied closely to the success of the EA program. Therefore, the program is led by the Dallas Deputy District Engineer.

Position Description

Performs engineering work. Work involves job rotation, training and continuing education in design, construction, construction inspection, maintenance, surveying, environmental and transportation operations-related activities with the intent to actively pursue engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams. Design activity is supervised by a licensed professional engineer who has authority for final approval of all projects. Work requires contact with local governmental representatives, engineering contractors and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Engineering Assistant I, II, or III duties:

  • Applies engineering principles, methods and techniques to a wide variety of transportation-related activities and assist in research and problem solving of engineering-related problems.
  • Assist in performing design computations and plan preparation activities, transportation maintenance-related activities and traffic analysis and data collections.
  • Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams and completion/maintenance of required documentation.
  • Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program which includes job rotation, training and continuing education.
  • Drives to assist in performing construction inspections and performs engineering-related duties in the field of transportation engineering.
  • Performs engineering-related duties in the field of transportation engineering.
  • Assists in creating plans, specifications and estimates (PS&E).
  • Assists with contract administration for construction and maintenance projects to ensure contractor compliance.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Engineering Assistant II or III additional duties:

  • Performs traffic barricade inspections, identifies problems and assists with resolution of traffic control plans.
  • Prepares and checks plans, specifications and estimates (PS&E) and designs.


Engineering Assistant III additional duties:

  • Performs advanced and specialized engineering design work.
  • Reviews construction plans prepared by consultants.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education required for an Engineering Assistant I, II, and III:

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.


Acceptable Substitutions for Engineering Assistant I or II :

  • Master's degree in engineering or a Master of engineering degree from an institution that offers a bachelor of science degree, in the same discipline, which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.
  • Doctoral degree in engineering or a doctor of engineering degree from an institution that offers a bachelor of science degree, in the same discipline, which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) may substitute for a Bachelor's degree.


Acceptable Substitutions for Engineering Assistant III:

  • Passing Professional Engineer (PE) exam prior to obtaining requisite experience for gaining PE licensure may substitute for two (2) years of engineering related work experience


Experience:

  • Engineering Assistant I: None (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).
  • Engineering Assistant II: 1 year in Engineering or related experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).
  • Engineering Assistant III: 2 years in Engineering or related experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).


Licenses and Certifications:

Engineering Assistant I:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Safety Impact Certificate


Engineering Assistant II and III:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • TX Engineer in Training Certificate
  • Safety Impact Certificate

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions for Engineering Assistant I, II and III:

  • Required to wear protective hard hat and other personal protective equipment/devices.
  • Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection.
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s).
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position.
  • Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time.
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes visual inspection of small defects/parts.
  • Close Visual Acuity-using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts.
  • Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills.

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.

  • All employees classified as Engineering Assistants are required to participate in the EA program. Participation in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program (EACDP) requires that employees sign a Program Agreement, which outlines employee responsibilities and service time commitment. Failure to comply with all terms of the Program Agreement will result in reclassification.
