Position Information

TxDOT's San Angelo District is looking for an Equipment Mechanic I or II based in our Sterling City Maintenance Office. This maintenance office covers 715 lane miles of US and State highways and farm to market roads across Sterling and Glasscock counties. The main duties of this position are mechanic-related, but there are opportunities to learn and assist with roadway maintenance tasks. Work alongside 13 full time employees with duties ranging from sign replacement, herbicide application, roadway level-up, seal coat, edge repair, tree trimming, litter pick-up, project inspection and much more. Work Schedule: Mon - Thurs 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Salary Plan/Grade:

Equipment Mechanic I (A16): $3,409.83 - $5,094.16 monthly

Equipment Mechanic II (A18): $3,793.41 - $5,921.25 monthly

Position Description

Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
  • Handles and disposes of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws.
  • Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights.
  • Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
  • Orders, picks up, and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment.
  • Performs acetylene and electric arc welding repairs.
  • Performs emergency spot repairs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities.
  • Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

Equipment Mechanic I: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.

Equipment Mechanic II: 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.

Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.


Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have or obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with 'N' (tanker) endorsement and without a transmission restriction within 180 calendar days from date of employment.

  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Reading and interpreting equipment repair and parts contracts
  • Using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to hazards - moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear - respirator, hard hat, or other device

  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
  • Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.
