Position Description

Performs highly advanced repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop. Inspects work performed by shop mechanics and/or contracted vendors. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in the construction of highways/bridges. Serves as a lead worker and trains less experienced technicians. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Performs duties of the Shop Coordinator in their absence.
  • Leads and trains less experienced technicians.
  • Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
  • Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
  • Handles and disposes of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws.
  • Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights.
  • Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.
  • Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
  • Performs annual state safety inspections on vehicles to include DOT required inspections.
  • Performs emergency spot repairs.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities.
  • Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers and mobile radios.
  • Travels and performs work in other shops throughout the state as required.
  • Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
  • Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Experience: 7 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.
  • Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.


Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
  • Mtr Veh St Inspector-Licensed. If performing State safety vehicle inspections must have or obtain a State Inspector's license.

  • Methods and procedures involving storage & transport of hazardous materials
  • Diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications
  • Troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems
  • Brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines
  • Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications
  • Maintaining a safe working relationship
  • Reading and interpreting equipment repair and parts contracts
  • Using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures
  • Read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)

  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
  • Will be required to work alternate schedules during an emergency response situation such as adverse weather events.
  • Will be required to travel to other district/division shops within the state as needed.
