Job Duties

Norfolk State University's (NSU) Department of Nursing and Allied Health invites applicants for the 12-month full time Tenure Track Assistant/Associate Professor Nursing teaching position. The successful candidate will teach nursing theory and skills in the classroom, campus laboratory, and clinical environments.

Teaching assignments may vary depending upon the need of the Nursing Program. Additional responsibilities of the position include academic advising; course development, course and program evaluation and revision; routine office hours; attending faculty meetings; assessment and grading student learning; supporting admissions; and other duties as assigned.

This nursing faculty position has a wide range of professional responsibilities including, but not limited to:

1. Planning and delivering nursing instruction to facilitate student learning.
2. Developing and providing meaningful and relevant learning activities in the classroom and clinical environments.
3. Applying best practices to facilitate teaching and learning processes and principles in an institutional setting committed to continuous quality improvement.
4. Evaluating, developing and maintaining curriculum and instructional materials.
5. Assessing and evaluating student progress toward attaining the learning outcomes established for the courses and program.
6. Documenting student learning, interpreting outcomes, and recording grades.
7. Providing academic assistance and advisement to students.
8. Assisting with student recruitment, admission and retention.
9. Maintaining accurate and appropriate student, instructor, course, and program documentation.
10. Creating and maintaining effective collegial relationships with students, faculty, university and clinical agency staff and administration.
11. Modeling professional evidence-based nursing that is sensitive to diverse and multicultural considerations.
12. Establishing and maintaining professional and ethical boundaries with students, co-workers, and others in all learning environments.
13. Participating in university services and events; perform other responsibilities that may be assigned by the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Earned doctorate (DNP, DNS, PhD, etc) with specialization in nursing, from a regionally accredited college or university.
2. A current, unencumbered license as a registered nurse or multistate licensure privilege to practice nursing in Virginia.
3. Evidence of current experience in nursing practice (minimum of five years) and teaching sufficient to demonstrate professional competence.
4. Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the following nursing disciplines: fundamentals; community health; women's health; pediatric, medical/surgical, or mental health; or a combination thereof.
5. Evidence of continuing professional education and a commitment to lifelong learning.
6. Ability to engage in scholarly activity.
7. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
8. Ability to effectively engage with students and ensure excellence in instruction.
9. Ability to identify and apply assessment tools and/or methods to determine if learning outcomes are achieved.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Post-secondary teaching experience.
2. Experience teaching in the classroom, online and clinical environments.
3. Experience in the following nursing disciplines: fundamentals; community health; women's health; pediatric, medical/surgical, or mental health; or a combination thereof.
4. Experience using learning management systems, including Blackboard.
5. Experience using patient care simulation software and high-fidelity simulators.
6. Proficiency with computer applications for instructional purposes and clinical documentation.
7. Knowledge of higher education accreditation.
