Facilities Engineer, Kinder Morgan, Inc., Houston, Texas (Hybrid)

Purpose and Scope:

Kinder Morgan, Inc. is one of the largest energy infrastructure companies in North America. We own an interest in or operate approximately 84,000 miles of pipelines and 157 terminals. Our pipelines transport natural gas, refined petroleum products, crude oil, condensate, CO2 and other products, and our terminals trans load and store liquid commodities including petroleum products, ethanol and chemicals, and bulk products, including petroleum coke, metals and ores.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Providing engineering problem solving, troubleshooting and general facility engineering to support the operations of CO2 business unit's six Oil & Gas assets and two Midstream assets.
  • Developing and maintaining process models using Promax or UniSim to support Oil & Gas and Midstream pipelines.
  • Developing and maintaining steady-state pipeline hydraulic models and transient pipeline hydraulic models using SPS.
  • Evaluating the risks and providing mitigation measures for pipeline over pressure protection from surge.
  • Providing hydraulic plans for potential new development projects for asset growth.
  • Maintaining hydraulic analysis library for each midstream asset.
  • Conducting PHA / HAZOPs.
  • Servicing as lead of multiple technical groups that support the CO2 business unit's Oil & Gas assets and Midstream assets.
  • Leading the development of CO2 engineering standards library
  • Ensuring proactive, ongoing, high quality customer service is provided to the supported assets.
  • Providing engineering support to drive improvement and efficiency to all CO2 business unit operational assets.
  • Leading/assisting in root cause failure analysis and in the development of standard practices and procedures and providing corrective actions to resolve operational problems and work with location personnel to resolve issues.
  • Ensuring procedures, standards & OMs are in compliance with regulations and corporate policies.
  • Providing recommendations for equipment selection in new and existing systems.


Position Requirements

Education Experience and Required Skills:

Position requires either (i) a Bachelor's degree (or an equivalent foreign degree) in Civil, Chemical, Mechanical, Natural Gas or Petroleum Engineering and 8 years of hydraulic modeling experience for oil and gas pipelines/facilities or (ii) a Master's degree (or an equivalent foreign degree) in Civil, Chemical, Mechanical, Natural Gas or Petroleum Engineering and 5 years of hydraulic modeling experience for oil and gas pipelines/facilities.

Must also have 4 years of experience (which can have been gained concurrently with either primary experience requirement above) working with the following:

  • Industry codes including B31.3/31.4, ASME, ANSI, API;
  • Developing and optimizing process engineering models using UniSim;
  • Hydraulic design of pipelines and facilities and developing the scope of work;
  • Capacity assessment and debottlenecking of pipeline and facility systems;
  • Identifying and mitigating the risk of transient surge pressure using SPS software; and
  • Evaluating pressure safety valves (PSVs).


Technical support responsibility requires off-working hours of up to 4 hours once per month. Position also requires 10% domestic travel.

This is a hybrid position working 3 days/week from the company's office in Houston, Texas and 2 days/week working from a home office.
