Minimum Qualifications

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

At least 5 years animal research experience with a focus on housing, equipment, and transportation of USDA covered species. Supervisory experience.

Position Summary

The Facilities Logistics Manager is responsible for managing and directing the facilities and equipment maintenance program and logistical support of multiple animal facilities and ancillary buildings across campus. This individual provides overall facilities management to help fulfill the missions of University Research Animal Resources in the Office of the Vice President for Research. This is a responsible position focusing on ensuring equipment, systems, and animal facilities are operating efficiently and effectively following regulatory, safety and institutional standards. This employee will take on a Relief Supervisory role, which involves being responsible for supervising the animal care technicians that provide the daily care and management of animals including feeding, watering, sanitation, animal health surveillance, enrichment and environmental monitoring following established schedules, procedures, and guidelines.

Work and perform emergency on-call duties as assigned, during weekdays, overnight, rotating weekends, holidays and on-call duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Ability to independently perform animal facility management duties in a research vivarium utilizing multiple laboratory animal species including NHPs, strictly adhering to applicable regulatory statues and institutional policies.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and succinctly utilizing good verbal and written skills.
  • Good leadership skills are essential and previous supervisory experience, as well as the ability to plan, establish, and supervise employees in the applicable standard operating procedures relating to animal care and biosafety & general safety practices.
  • Ability to define work priorities, allocate labor and equipment resources and evaluate employee work progress.
  • Organizational skills establishing, adjusting, and fulfilling all job responsibilities to ensure timely and accurate completion of work while efficiently using resources.
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to formulate and implement effective and efficient solutions.
  • Skilled in computer programs such as Word & Excel and possess an aptitude for learning new facility management software programs.
  • Knowledge of animal housing equipment, and large animal sanitation equipment including the equipment's workflow and its integration into a working animal facility.
  • Knowledge of buildings, facilities and building operations & support.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting equipment and facilities malfunctions and implementing cost effective and efficient resolutions.
  • Ability to work independently using sound judgement and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively in all forms.


Physical Demands
  • Sustained periods of physical activity such as standing, bending, stooping, reaching above shoulder level, and lifting 50 pounds.
  • Work sometimes under demanding conditions (high humidity, unpleasant odors, animal excreta and noise).
  • Work environment involves exposure to biohazards and/or physical risks, which involve following established safety procedures.
  • May take multiple showers each day and wear PPE (PAPRs, protective clothing, battery packs, respirators, gloves, etc.) and stand on hard surfaces for prolonged periods of time.
  • Restrain, handle, and treat multiple species of animals in relatively confined spaces.
  • Work may be physically demanding involving the transport, relocation and positioning of animal care and auxiliary equipment.
  • Participation in the research occupational health and safety program which may include specific vaccinations before entering restricted facilities.
  • Driving as needed to perform job duties.

  • Plans, coordinates, and implements preventative maintenance, general maintenance and service programs relating to animal facilities, operational systems, caging systems and all ancillary equipment and buildings.
  • Coordinates all activities related to animal facilities major repair and renovation projects such as planning, design, and budget/cost development with departmental operations management, facilities management division, outside contractors, vendors, etc.
  • Plans and establishes preventative maintenance for ancillary equipment, systems, and animal facilities.
  • Assures appropriate completion based on contract specifications and schedules.

  • Responsible for the management and disposition of property control inventories following institutional procedures and guidelines.
  • Manages transportation of equipment, cages, and materials on and off campus.
  • Gathers samples, takes measurements and records/maintains data relating to illumination, water quality, air exchanges, pressure differentials, environmental conditions, etc.
  • Maintains all tools and technical equipment and ensures appropriate maintenance and calibration.
  • Supervises subordinate employees as directed.
  • Performs on-call duties relating to facilities, buildings and equipment malfunctions or problems.
  • Maintains record and logs and order materials and supplies.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Coordinates all URAR inter-facility physical transportations of animals and the oversight of procedures for getting the vehicles to appropriate temperature before transportation, cleaning of the vehicles afterwards, and maintaining the SOPs for these procedures.
  • Develops procedures for transportation of old world and new world NHPs to the diagnostic and imaging equipment on campus and is an official back-up driver for those procedures.
  • Transports animals inter-institutionally, including to and from the Atlanta airport as needed.

  • Performs and supervises subordinate employees in the daily care and management of research animals including feeding, watering, animal handling/transport, animal health surveillance, enrichment, and environmental monitoring.
  • Assures animals are appropriately maintained in accordance with applicable regulatory statutes and institutional policies.
  • Maintains, operates, and supervises subordinate employees in the proper sanitization and sterilization practices in the research animal vivarium.
  • Conducts, monitors, and supervises employees in the daily observation of animals for signs of diseases, sickness, or abnormal behavior.
  • Initiates and maintains all facility records such as animal room logs, sanitation logs, census activity sheets, etc.

  • Ensures all fleet vehicles and transport equipment receives preventative maintenance on established schedules and is operating safely and efficiently.
  • Coordinates all special design and fabrication projects including cost estimates for materials and labor budgets.
  • Designs, fabricates, and retrofits primary enclosures, devices and delivery systems involving Heliarc, MIG, thermoplastics welding and other technical fabrication techniques utilizing metals, composites and other materials.
