Job Summary

The Fire and Life Safety Specialist(FLSS) works directly with the campus community in the planning and development of fire and life safety initiatives. The FLSS also assists with Emergency and Fire Safety programs, procedures, and policy initiatives. This position is highly complex and will be assigned to various projects and operations within the areas of responsibility. The performance and decisions made in this role are instrumental in providing a safe and healthy campus for faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$4,682 - $4,834/month

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, environmental engineering, environmental health, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field.
2. One (1) year (12 months) of full time (or part-time equivalent) professional work experience in a safety or compliance related field.
3. Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Licensed EMR or EMT B in the state of Illinois or the ability to obtain within the first year of employment.
2. Posses relevant professional certifications such as Certified Fire Inspector (CFI), Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS), Certified Fire Plan Examiner (CFPE), or Graduate/Associate/Certified Safety Professional (GSP, ASP, CSP).

Work Hours

Core work hours are Monday - Friday; 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Physical Requirements - The physical requirements for this position vary. It, at times, involves a degree of physical exertion. The position requires the following minimum physical capabilities:

- Ability to climb ladders, access multiple flights of stairs, work at heights.
- Ability to enter and work in confined areas such as tunnels, and crawl spaces.
- Ability to work in personnel protective clothing while working with toxic or hazardous agents.
- Physically and medically able to wear various respirators
- Ability to lift 30 pounds

The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of applicant materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
