Are you looking to be a part of a dynamic team that manages and assesses California's inland fisheries resources? The California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Fisheries Branch is seeking 2 motivated individuals to work as Scientific Aids on the Inland Fisheries Assessment and Monitoring (IFAM) Program's statewide field crew. IFAM's goal is to maintain and improve both warm and coldwater recreational sportfish populations within California's lakes and reservoirs, and is based out of the West Sacramento Field Station.

These positions engage in a wide variety of projects and will have the opportunity to participate in state-funded travel throughout the state. This is a great opportunity to learn multiple survey techniques including boat and backpack electrofishing, collection of scales and genetic tissue, gill netting, collection of benthic macroinvertebrates, habitat and water quality evaluation, and angler surveys.

Main duties may include field-based fisheries research to assess the status of fish populations; coordinating the seasonal landlocked salmon egg collection (Kokanee and Chinook); data entry, management, and quality assurance; and aiding the fishing contest permit process. There will also be opportunity to gain experience in analyzing and summarizing data for publications and in the regulatory processes of Fisheries Branch. Candidates must possess a strong ability to collect and accurately record field data; follow protocols; operate and maintain survey equipment, vehicles, and vessels; exercise safety while in the field; and maintain a professional and personable demeanor.

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions
Work days will begin at the Fisheries Branch field office in West Sacramento. If not in the office, travel to remote field sites on unpaved roads in 4x4 vehicles may be required. Hours are variable, 15-40 hours/week. This position is seasonal in nature and available work is heaviest in spring and fall. Staff may be required to wear personal protective equipment, such as N95 masks, while performing tasks due to COVID-19 protocols.

Special Requirements
• Ability to use a computer keyboard in a sitting and/or standing position several hours a day

• Physical strength and agility, and ability to move 40 pounds

• Ability to function on a small, state vessel on a lake or reservoir

• Ability to swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least 5 minutes

• Ability to engage, interact, and communicate with staff and members of the public with open-mindedness, flexibility, and tact

• Possession of a valid state driver's license, capable of driving a State-owned vehicle, and ability to operate a full size, 4x4 pick-up truck

• Must be able to work odd hours/days (weekend work and early start times may be required)
