ABOUT THIS POSITION

The Public Works Department strives to improve the quality of life in Phoenix through the efficient delivery of outstanding solid waste, fleet, facilities, and energy management services.

The Public Works Department is looking for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic for the repairs and maintenance of fire equipment, heavy diesel trucks, refuse collection equipment, earth-moving equipment, and related construction equipment with various types of hydraulic components. Heavy Equipment Mechanics also perform regular preventative maintenance, schedule and conduct safety inspections, test drive vehicles, and records repairs and services on work orders. Some positions may be required to provide emergency response during severe weather (floods, storms, etc.).

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • ASE or EVT Certification(s).
  • Trade school/apprenticeship certificate.
  • Welding and fabricating skills with the use of MIG, TIG, and Plasma cutter.

SALARY

Pay Range: $28.86 to $42.64 per hour.

Hiring Range: $28.86 to $35.08 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five years of experience as a skilled automotive mechanic, including some experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy duty construction or firefighting equipment.
  • OR Completion of a recognized heavy duty equipment mechanic apprenticeship.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted .

  • Positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
  • Some positions may be required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (C.D.L.).
  • Pre-employment drug testing is required for C.D.L. positions. Employees in C.D.L. positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
  • Experience with:
    • Alternative fuel systems specific to CNG vehicle conversions, testing and repair.
    • Reading electrical and hydraulic schematics.
    • Heavy and Off Road equipment maintenance, including air conditioning.
    • Welding and fabrication.
    • Refuge trucks.
  • The following may be required:
    • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
    • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds
    • Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
