Job Description:


The Washington Commanders are seeking a skilled Football Solutions Data Engineer to manage the evolution of our data practices. This role is critical in ensuring the secure handling, processing, and analysis of all football-related data and is essential to the development and maintenance of the club's proprietary web applications that support coaching, scouting, and other football departments.

Key Responsibilities:


Data Pipeline Development:
• Design, build, document, and maintain robust data pipelines that process and manage football-related data.
• Implement ETL processes that efficiently extract, transform, and load data from various sources, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
• Develop algorithms for quality assurance and data imputation, preparing data for exploratory analysis and quantitative modeling.

Cloud Management:
• Lead the migration of our SQL environment to Azure, ensuring seamless data integration and replication.
• Manage and optimize cloud-based database solutions using Azure, providing secure, scalable, and reliable performance.

Data Security & Compliance:
• Apply encryption methods to protect sensitive football data at rest and in transit.
• Define and enforce access controls to limit data exposure to authorized personnel only.
• Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Communication:
• Work closely with football operations, coaching, scouting, and analytics teams to align data engineering efforts with organizational goals.
• Provide technical support and guidance to colleagues on data-related matters, helping them leverage data for strategic decisions.
• Coordinate with data providers around planned changes to data feeds.
• Research and evaluate potential data vendors.

System Optimization & Documentation:
• Continuously evaluate and enhance data infrastructure for scalability, performance, and cost-effectiveness.
• Monitor system performance, identify bottlenecks, and optimize data storage and retrieval mechanisms.
• Promote best practices in data engineering, including code quality, documentation, and version control.
• Document data pipelines, processes, and security protocols for knowledge sharing and future reference.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• 3-4 years of professional experience in data engineering, preferably with exposure to sports or football-related data.
• Experience developing complex databases and data warehouses for large-scale analytics systems.
• Proficiency in SQL, Python, ETL tools, and cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS).
• Strong experience with Azure databases, including design, management, and optimization.
• Experience with SQL environment migration to Azure and replication of ETL processes.
• Proven expertise in data modeling, database design, and performance optimization.
• Strong understanding of data encryption and access control methods.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Passion for football and understanding of football operations is a plus.
