Job Description and Duties

FORESTRY TECHNICIAN (PERMANENT INTERMITTENT) - NORTH COAST REDWOODS / NATURAL RESOURCES / SUE-MEG STATE PARK

The reporting location for this position is Sue-Meg State Park in Trinidad, CA. This position will work under the close supervision of Senior Environmental Scientist.

The position will work on a variety of vegetation program functions including invasive species contol, succession management, and vegetation monitoring throughout the District. Working under close supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist, the Forestry Technician will support the District Resource Management Program by assisting with the implementation of resource restoration projects, primarily invasive plant control, but may also assist with botanical surveys, forest restoration, prescribed fire and other aspects of habitat restoration. Invasive species control will include the use of a variety of treatment methods including the use of herbicide. Individual may act as the State's representative to assure that contractors (California Conservation Corps, CalFire, and other types of work crews) adhere to the restoration prescriptions, best management practices and conditions of environmental permits as stipulated by contract.

APPLICANTS SHOULD HAVE THE FOLLOWING QUALITIES: Work well as an individual and in a multi-disciplinary team setting. Be flexible and open-minded and be able to work under harsh environmental conditions (wind, rain, sun exposure, dense vegetation, steep slopes, and day and night shifts). The position will require the Incumbent to perform some minor strenuous labor (e.g. carrying up to 40 lbs) and to be able to navigate and hike two to five miles in coastal and forested environments. Ability to identify flora of northern California is a plus, but can be learned on the job. Applicant must have excellent field orientation skills and basic familiarity with electronic data collection (Field Maps/ArcMap/ArcPro). May be required to camp out up to 3 nights per week and work occasionally on weekends. Individual will have to operate 4-wheel drive trucks and ATV's (ATV certified preferred).

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

This position may work up to 1500 hours per year/in a 12 consecutive month period.

Working Conditions

Physical work outdoors in various weather conditions. During prescribed fire operations, employee will be exposed to smoke and heat and may be required to work long hours and weekends/holidays. As safety allows, work continues in

all types of weather.
