Position Description

Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • Reviews proposed construction plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) and supporting documents for accuracy and completeness to ensure compliance with state and federal laws, policies, procedures, and design guidelines.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
  • Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
  • Performs hand and/or computer-aided drafting, design and calculating work.


Minimum Qualifications:

General Transportation Tech I: No experience or education required.

General Transportation Tech II: 1 YEAR transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent)

General Transportation Tech III: 2 YEARS transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent)

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle
  • Safety Impact Certificate


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous construction experience
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word or Excel preferred. Familiarity with basic computer and technology skills preferred. Ability to perform basic algebra for calculating areas of shapes with a calculator or computer.

  • Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and

    maintenance work
  • Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques

  • Using basic mathematical fundamentals
  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25lbs
  • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
